Back in Touch - 2021

Forget the Lions tour, forget the race for the Premiership title, what you’ve really been waiting for – I know – is an update on my long-standing efforts to play Touch Rugby.

And it has been such a long wait – 12th July 2019 was the last occasion on which I was able to report on the progress of Dave’s Dad’s Dog’s Dead, the 2020 season having been lost in its entirety to that infernal Covid-19 pandemic.

And so to the start of Chesham Premiership 2021 yesterday evening.  Sadly, Covid has meant fewer teams entering, with just four teams playing one another three times each. More sadly, only a few remnants of the usual DDDD squad were available last night and skipper Tommy was struck down with a hamstring injury. Even more sadly, we started our campaign against the reigning champions. 

It was also raining.

Excuses duly out of the way, it is safe to say that DDDD were spanked harder than Max Mosely in a dungeon. We scored twice. We conceded rather more than that. 

It was, nevertheless, good to be back. My creaking old body somehow got through it (although I think it is safe to day that I am not getting any quicker), my skill levels were just about acceptable and the post-match beer tasted great. Today is bloody painful, but no more than expected.

As for DDDD, I think it is safe to say that things can only get better …
