Saxons axed

I am pleased to see that the RFU have decided that England’s second string rugby team will no longer be called ‘England Saxons’.

The name has been dropped, apparently, because it is “inappropriate” and “doesn’t reflect diversity in society.”

As a result, no doubt the decision will be seized upon by the “political correctness gone mad” brigade who will bandy the words “woke’ and “snowflake” about indiscriminately whilst telling us that our right to free speech is being curtailed.

All of which is utter tosh.

Frankly, whether use of the word “Saxons” is inappropriate or otherwise, it has always, since its introduction in 2006, been a bloody awful name for an international rugby team, no doubt dreamt up by the same marketing types who each year serve up the usual twaddle about the significant historical embellishments to yet another new England rugby kit.

So, good riddance to the England Saxons, who will revert to the name ‘England A’ to face Scotland A at the end of June at Welford Road.

To which I ask, whatever was wrong with ‘England B’?

Here is one more case of revisionism. The Stanford Indians are no longer the “Indians”, and now are the big in red color “S” Cardinals.
