Growth and Decline of European Soccer Leagues

On Sunday, the 12 biggest European Soccer Leagues clubs gave an announcement that they were planning to break away to form a Super League out of an established order. The plan backfired with the realization that there wasn’t enough backing from all the six clubs on Tuesday. On Wednesday, more clubs decided to leave the project. The Super League was halted on Tuesday to decide the necessary steps that were meant to reshape the Kickstarter project. The 48-hour power plays effectively put an end to those who wanted to leave UEFA, which is the governing body for European soccer leagues. 

The only club that decided to stand without releasing any statements about the failed start of the Super League to their fans were Real Madrid and Barcelona. On Wednesday, Andrea Agnelli, who is Juventus chairman and one of the founding members of the botched Super League project, said, “I remain convinced of the beauty of that project, but admittedly … I mean, I don’t think that that project is still up and running.”

There were plans organized by 12 of the biggest European soccer leagues clubs to create a new competition called the Super League. There were plans laid down by the league of offering some of the world’s biggest clubs permanent spots and also play matches on weekdays. At the same time, the clubs will be allowed to stay in their domestic competitions. The governing body did not support the plan for international soccer and UEFA – FIFA. 

What came as a blow to many was that Chelsea was the first team to pull out their Super League deal. James Benge, CBS Sports insider, confirmed this. The second club to pull out was Manchester City, followed by the rest of the Premier League clubs on Tuesday night. 

The Original Super League Plans 

The discussion to start the Super League started a while back for a closed competition that would involve the biggest clubs in Europe. Many different theoretical proposals have been brought forth in the previous years, proposing what the Super League would do. Twelve clubs announced on Sunday that they were planning to pull out from UEFA to create their own league. Plans were underway to add three more permanent members. There were also plans to leave five spots open in the 20-team format. It was meant to qualify European Soccer Leagues clubs from Europe’s domestic competitions.

Financial Backing 

At least $425 million was the earnings for would-be fixtures Super League signing up. €350 million ($425 million) was the promised amount for each permanent member signing up. This is according to the New York Times. 

Six group-stage games are no longer in play. What is there now are plans by UEFA to expand from 32 to 36 participants. Each of them will have to play 10 group stage games – five away and five home. Over 100 new matches are created with this shift. Unlike this current season, the knockout stage will be similar.
