O2 out of Touch...

Chatting in the bar following touch training this week I discovered, much to my surprise, that back in July this year the RFU announced the end of sponsorship by O2 of the RFU/O2 Touch programme.

I’m not quite sure how I missed this news at the time, nor the news that the RFU has decided to go somewhat off piste by replacing the massively successful O2 touch programme with “The Touch Union” – a new non-contact version of the game based very closely on the “Ready4Rugby” format of the game introduced during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic last year.

Why a new format, rather than the already established game played by tens of thousands of players worldwide under the auspices of the Federation of International Touch? I can only assume that someone at the RFU rather short-sightedly decided it would be nice to own a shiny new product rather than support an already established and much-played sport.

The England Touch Association, under whose governance over 20,000 players compete regularly, has been very diplomatic in its response but deep down must be livid at the RFU’s clear and blatant attempt to muscle in on its patch.

I have to say that, having played both Touch and Ready4Rugby, there really is no comparison – the latter falling very much between two stools, providing neither the physicality or structure of rugby nor the skills, strategy and excitement of Touch.

I know where my loyalties lie and suspect (and hope) that “The Touch Union” will be something of a short-lived venture, or may even just serve as a conduit into “real” Touch.
