New weapon for Rodgers: Jets secure Mike Williams

After leaving the Los Angeles Chargers – the departure of the 29-year-old 2017 first-round pick (seventh overall) saved the team from California $20M – Mike Williams was a free agent. And due to his skill set, he is certainly a man who would be needed and valued by many NFL teams.

The New York Jets have now signed Williams. The franchise from the AFC East, which will be entering its second year with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers (40) and this time hopes that the former Packer (Achilles tendon tear) will not be out of action, has inked Williams to a one-year contract worth up to $15 million. In 88 regular-season games, the wide receiver, who is feared above all as a “deep threat”, has so far amassed 4,806 yards and 31 touchdowns.

In the “Big Apple”, the newly acquired pro may now form a formidable duo with Garrett Wilson (23).

New contract details for Jeudy

Jerry Jeudy (24) has agreed to a contract with the Cleveland Browns. According to media reports, the wide receiver will sign for three years and $41M. His earnings could rise to up to $58 million. The 2020 first-round pick (15th overall) came to Cleveland as part of a trade with the Broncos, who see him as a potential new No. 1 receiver. There had been interest last year, and the deal finally went through this offseason.

Bengals get Burrow protector

After being cut by the New England Patriots, offensive tackle Trent Brown has been out of a job for a few days. Now the Cincinnati Bengals have made a move and secured the services of the 30-year-old veteran for an initial one-year contract. The 2015 seventh-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers (2015 to 2017), who has also played for the Raiders (2019 to 2020) in addition to the Patriots (2018 and most recently since 2021), has been pencilled in as a right tackle to protect star quarterback Joe Burrow, according to media reports. Orlando Brown (27) will operate on the left side.

Incidentally, Trent Brown has been an institution of late: According to Next Gen Stats, the NFL pro – deployed as a left tackle – has faced one-on-one situations on 88.3 per cent of his “pass blocking snaps”, and has only allowed pressure on the quarterback in 7.1 per cent of these situations. That’s the second-best rate in the league behind Cowboys ace Tyron Smith (now Jets).

49ers sign Dobbs

Quarterback Joshua Dobbs (29) has found a new team. After appearing in eight and five games for the Cardinals and Vikings last season respectively, the 2017 fourth-round pick has signed with the San Francisco 49ers. As Purdy’s backup, Dobbs earns $2.25 million guaranteed in one year, with an additional $750,000 available in bonuses. Last year’s backup Sam Darnold completes the quarterback rotation: he has gone to the Midwest and signed with the Vikings.

Mattison finds new team

Running back Alexander Mattison has found a new team after being released by the Minnesota Vikings. As reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz, among others, the 25-year-old is moving to the Las Vegas Raiders. Mattison was the backup behind Dalvin Cook for the first few years of his career before taking over as starter last season, but was unable to fully convince the coaching staff that he’s a worthy keep. In five years he has just over 3000 total yards and 17 TDs.

Accounting error: NFL draft penalty for the 49ers

The 2024 Super Bowl participant (22:25 in overtime against the once again victorious Kansas City Chiefs) has been severely penalized because the National Football League found errors in the San Francisco 49ers’ payroll (at the end of the 2022/23 season). The league has completely stripped head coach Kyle Shanahan’s team of a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, while this year’s fourth-round pick has been moved to the end of the fourth round (from number 131 to 135).

Johnson extends in Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills have lost several big pieces of their defensive backfield this offseason in Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde. However, another part of the defense will remain in Buffalo: according to NFL insider Adam Schefter, cornerback Taron Johnson has signed a three-year, $31 million contract extension. This would make the 27-year-old, who was honored last year by being named Second-Team All Pro, the highest-paid nickel cornerback in the NFL.

Young signs with the Saints

After Chase Young’s stint with the San Francisco 49ers came to an end after just half a season, the second-overall pick from the 2020 draft was able to start looking for a new team. Young has now found one. According to reports, the pass rusher, who is still only 24, has signed a fully guaranteed one-year contract worth 13 million dollars with the New Orleans Saints – a so-called ‘Prove It’ deal. Young’s NFL career got off to a promising start in Washington. However, he was unable to build on his debut season, for which he was honored as the best defensive rookie of the year, partly due to serious injuries. Now he can learn and prove himself again next year alongside the experienced Cameron Jordan.

At the age of 28: Vander Esch ends his career

Just a few days after being released by the Dallas Cowboys, linebacker Leighton Vander Esch has ended his career. The now 28-year-old was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft and went straight to the Pro Bowl in his first season with “America’s Team”. After his second NFL season ended prematurely due to a nerve injury in his neck, the linebacker also suffered a neck injury last year, which has now forced him into retirement.

Osborn becomes a Patriot

Wide receiver K.J. Osborn, most recently with the Minnesota Vikings, will sign with the New England Patriots. The 26-year-old has career totals of 1,845 yards with 15 touchdowns in three years with the Vikes. But it was his final season with career lows (540 yards, only three scores) that led to Osborn becoming a free agent.

Bears deal quarterback: Fields to Steelers

The Chicago Bears have apparently found a trade partner to give up Justin Fields. The No. 11 pick in the 2021 draft has been the Bears’ starter the past three years, but has failed to prove himself as a quarterback for the future. Instead, Chicago will select a new quarterback, presumably USC’s Caleb Williams, with the first pick in the upcoming draft, making Fields redundant in the Bears’ plans. Now the 25-year-old is moving to the Pittsburgh Steelers via trade.

In return, a 2025 sixth-round pick will be sent to Chicago, which could be converted into a fourth-round pick depending on Fields’ playing time. In Pittsburgh, he will serve as a backup to Russell Wilson, who is signed for one year and only costs $1.2 million.
