“We’re Built for This Sh*t”; Jets Introduce Glenn, Mougey

A familiar face stepped to the podium and joked “I wear glasses now”, alluding to the fact that it’s been quite some time since he had an audience of Jets beat reporters.  New Jets head coach Aaron Glenn had just been announced, and it was time for him thank those that got him to where he is today, and to lay out his vision to Jets fans.

He would start by thanking his God, his wife of 28 years, his old High School football coach, Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells, current Broncos coach Sean Payton and Al Groh, another former Jets coach.

Glenn talked about his wife telling him to “go coach” after watching her husband scream at a game he was watching on television.  It was that advice that “lifted a weight” off of his shoulders after spending a couple of years as a “business man” following his retirement.

The former pro bowl cornerback’s first call was to Parcells, who told him to “go be a scout first”.  Glenn didn’t like the idea.  He didn’t want to be a scout.  “The best coaches” are good talent evaluators said Parcells, and Glenn got on board.  That’s how Glenn’s journey to becoming a head coach started before landing at 1 Jets Drive today.

Glenn brought back memories of Rex Ryan.  Not of Rex’s bold predictions and brash demeanor, but his desire to “come home” to coach the Jets.  This was the job he wanted.  There were other offers.  There were other interviews scheduled.  But Glenn wanted to come back to where his NFL journey started.  Like Ryan, being a Jet means something to Glenn.

The message to his players was to “buckle up” and expect to be coached hard.  He talked about making sure players are knowledgeable before they can be accountable.  Make sure they know their jobs before you have to correct them for doing it wrong is essentially what Glenn was saying.  A stark contrast from the laid back Robert Saleh who worried far too much about being friends with his players.

The elephant in the room, Aaron Rodgers, was addressed by Glenn before the Q&A even got under way.  Glenn said he has been in contact with Rodgers via text, and that the decision on his future will not be rushed, and the goal will be to evaluate and get it right.

Mougey spoke first at the podium and talked about his new job is an honor.  He mentioned the Jets “proud” tradition before thanking the Johnson’s and reminding fans that his new bosses care a great deal about the team and the fans.

He then sat quietly as Glenn was peppered with questions before being asked one himself.  Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic wanted to know what his core tenets are in identifying players as potential draft choices.  His answer was that he would speak to his head coach about that in the coming days.

He would later add via SNY that he would like to attend the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama this week but was unlikely to do so.
