Cubs veteran owns up to game costing 9th inning error

The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres battled through a wild, chaotic game on Sunday afternoon, with the Padres ultimately claiming a 8-7 victory. From the explosive first inning, which saw eight total runs cross the plate, to the dramatic ninth inning where a costly error proved to be the game’s turning point, this contest was filled with intense moments from start to finish.
A wild first inning
To begin the game, Cubs starting pitcher Ben Brown gave up three runs. In the bottom of the first inning, Chicago answered by chasing Padres starting pitcher Kyle Hart out of the game after recording just two outs. The Cubs ultimately scored five runs in what was a 47-minute inning.

Innings 2-8
After a five-run opening inning, the Cubs scored two more runs in the second inning. Unfortunately that was it for them scoring wise and San Diego slowly chipped away afterwards as they scored two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and then another in the eighth to tie the game at seven.
Key moments in innings 2-8 included Kyle Tucker slugging a two-run home run and Justin Turner gunning down Jackson Merrill at home plate to temporarily preserve the Cubs lead in the sixth inning. Porter Hodge ended up allowing the game to be tied at seven a piece as he gave up one run during the eighth inning.

Ninth inning disaster for Justin Turner and the Chicago Cubs
With Ryan Pressly on the mound, runners on first and second, and one out in the inning, Pressly got Manny Machado to hit into what appeared to be an easy inning-ending double play. Unfortunately Justin Turner was not able to handle the in-between hop at first base, the baseball got by him, and the Padres scored on the error.

Turner’s error ended up being the game deciding play as San Diego fended off a sweep and won Sunday’s game by a score of 8-7. Afterwards Turner took full responsibility and said, “no excesses, ball’s got to be caught.”
There’s no knowing how this game would have turned out had Turner converted the double play and Chicago still not scored in the bottom of the inning, which would have led to the two sides playing extra innings. However, losing in extras would feel a lot better than losing off an error.
Nonetheless the Cubs have played great since the calendar switched to April, winning four out of their first five games. Chicago will be back in action Monday night for a showdown against the Texas Rangers.
