Notre Dame football loses big name to rival USC in transfer portal

Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman waits to run onto the field during the Blue-Gold game at Notre Dame Stadium.

Notre Dame football has seen a couple of key names enter the transfer portal this week after spring ball concluded. The biggest news came when quarterback Steve Angeli chose to enter the transfer portal after a quarterback battle this spring.

Angeli helped the Irish on their run in the College Football Playoff, leading the team to a much-needed field goal in the CFP semifinals when Riley Leonard suffered an injury. The junior appeared to be beaten out by CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey during the three-way QB battle this spring.

One big-time NFL legacy name entered the transfer portal.

Safety Kennedy Urlacher, the son of Chicago Bears legend Brian Urlacher, is choosing to leave the program after one year with the Irish. The five-foot-11, 196-pound defensive back appeared in eight games in 2024.

Kennedy recorded 12 tackles, one fumble recovery, and one pass defensed in his freshman year.

Per Hayes Fawcett of On3, Urlacher committed to USC.

“BREAKING: Notre Dame transfer Safety Kennedy Urlacher has Committed to USC, he tells  @on3sports,” Fawcett wrote. “The 5’11 200 S will have 3 years of eligibility remaining. He’s the Son of NFL Hall of Fame LB Brian Urlacher.”

Per 24/7 Sports, Kennedy was a three-star recruit out of Chandler High School in Arizona.

The Irish have strong depth in the secondary, and Urlacher’s decision to transfer is probably best for both parties. But going to USC is a choice.
