Chicago Bears reveal bad news on Kyler Gordon, Shemar Turner
On Saturday, Chicago Bears rookies and quarterbacks reported for the start of training camp.
The Bears are getting set to defend the NFC North crown in Ben Johnson’s second season as head coach.
Chicago will need to see improvement from the defense if it hopes to take the next step and compete for a Super Bowl. The Bears revealed a few roster moves before practice gets underway next week, and they had some bad news for a couple of defenders.
Per the Bears, linebacker T.J. Edwards was placed on the active/non-football injury list. Linebacker Keyshaun Elliott, cornerback Kyler Gordon, linebacker Noah Sewell, offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo, and defensive lineman Shemar Turner were placed on the active/physically unable to perform list.
The Bears were hoping to see Gordon at practice during the spring, but he missed time at practice due to a soft tissue injury. Head coach Ben Johnson told reporters he was unhappy with Gordon’s availability last season, as he played in just three games and started in one.
“We spoke last year, and neither one of us was really happy with how it went just from a perspective of being available to get to know each other,” Johnson said, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN. “I think he only played in three games when I look back at it, and so, you know, this spring was going to be a springboard for us to get going in the right direction.
“We’re still working through that. We’re still trying to get that availability piece going. We know he’s a good player when he’s out there, but trust level is a huge thing for this team, for this coaching staff, for the locker room, and you can only develop that trust by being available.”

It looks like Gordon will need some time this summer to heal up before he’s ready to be a full participant at practice.
As for Turner, the No. 62 pick in the 2025 draft, the Bears hoped to see him return to practice near the start of training camp after he suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens.
“We’ll see with Shemar,” head coach Ben Johnson told reporters this spring. “This summer is going to be a big part for him. We’ll have a good six weeks off and see where he’s at when we come back for camp.”
Turner dealt with shin issues his final season in college at Texas A&M and dealt with an ankle injury during training camp last season after showing up to spring training out of shape.
The Bears hoped to use Turner as a defensive end this year, but he’s not been able to practice in the new role.
