Chicago White Sox ideal target ahead of MLB trade deadline revealed as 1x NL Cy Young Award winner

The Chicago White Sox are 54-47 on the season and clinging to a one-game lead for first place in the American League Central Division. Indeed, Chicago has been one of the best stories in Major League Baseball this year. After three straight seasons of losing more than 100 games a year, they have put a contender together that is poised to compete for years to come.

As is the case with every contender, though, they have some pieces missing. While the offense generally puts up a plethora of runs each game, the pitching has turned out to be suspect. As the MLB trade deadline nears, it is clear that the White Sox will need to add to their pitching staff.

Sandy Alcantara named the ideal trade target for the Chicago White Sox

There are, of course, many pitchers that are going to be available leading up to the MLB trade deadline. One interesting name that could be moved is 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara.

Recently, Bleacher Report named him as Chicago’s ideal target:

“If the White Sox can get that ace for a prorated $5M this year and a $21M club option next year, that would be huge. After entering this season feeling at least one more year away in their rebuild, they’re not likely to be a “swapping prospects for rentals” deadline team. But maybe they get a bit aggressive for a guy who would also be their Opening Day starter in 2027—assuming there eventually is an Opening Day in 2027…”

Back in 2022, Alcantara won the Cy Young Award in the National League by going 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. He also threw six complete games and one shutout.

Since then, however, he has been a shadow of his former self. In 2023, he was 7-12 with a 4.14 ERA, and he missed all of 2024 due to injury.

Last season, Alcantara was 11-12 with a 5.36 ERA, and this season is 10-6 with a 4.01 ERA.

The good news is that he leads all baseball with 22 starts, indicating that he is healthy. He also leads the Majors with 143.2 innings pitched.

Chicago may be taking  risk by adding Alcantara to the rotation at the deadline, but if he can get better with a change of scenery, he would be a huge boost to a team that is right in the thick of a postseason berth.
