Cubs’ former top prospect is making them regret their major trade
Over the winter, the Chicago Cubs needed starting pitching, so they went out and acquired Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins. They sent top prospect Owen Caissie to the Marlins in exchange, so it was painful, but it was a move they felt they had to make.
The Cubs pursued Cabrera at the MLB trade deadline last summer, but were unable to come to terms with the Marlins on a deal the. They had been aggressively pursuing Cabrera for quite some time, and they finally landed their man.
But here we are, past the halfway point of the 2026 campaign, and Chicago may ultimately regret its move.
Cabrera has struggled mightily, owning a 5.10 ERA and 1.396 WHIP through 14 starts. He is now on the injured list for the second time this season, and it’s not like his 5.07 FIP indicates that he has been a victim of bad luck when he has been on the mound.
As for Caissie? Well, let’s just say the former Cubs farmhand has been tearing it up in Miami.
Chicago Cubs surely regret the Owen Caissie trade

Caissie got off to a slow start this season, but since then, he has been raking.
The talented outfielder has already homered 11 times while driving in 49 runs on the year, posting an .835 OPS in May and an .865 OPS in June. He has played a significant role in the Marlins’ turnaround over the month-plus, and Chicago could certainly use that production … or at least it could use Caissie as an asset.
Caissie is also slashing a fantastic .317/.351/.617 with runners in scoring position, and his 1.210 OPS in high-leverage situations is beyond fantastic. His defense certainly leaves something to be desired, but he was never touted for his glove when he was in the Cubs’ system, anyway.
Cabrera could make Chicago forget about this deal — at least in some capacity — by bouncing back once he returns from injury, but it’s also important to remember that the right-hander has tossed 100 innings just once in his major-league career. That came last season, when he tallied 137.2 frames in a career year for the Marlins.
The Cubs desperately needed pitching when they acquired Cabrera (they still do), and the 28-year-old absolutely has outstanding stuff. You can understand why they made the trade. It just might not turn out very well for them.
