Sophie Cunningham addresses WNBA’s shocking Caitlin Clark decision

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham had a lot to say on the most recent episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast.

While she was involved in her own incident during Indiana’s matchup against the Phoenix Mercury on June 22, it has been Cunningham’s teammate, Caitlin Clark, who has dominated headlines of late.

Apart from getting injured on Wednesday in a rematch against Phoenix because of an ill-advised foul, Clark also took a hit to the throat, prompting a full-on WNBA investigation. This ultimately led to Mercury star Alyssa Thomas getting called for a Flagrant 2 foul and being handed a one-game suspension.

Another issue that caught the eye of Cunningham and her podcast co-host, West Wilson, is the much-talked-about WNBA 30th-anniversary poster. For reasons unknown, the league decided not to include Clark in the promotional material, which featured former and current WNBA stars.

Cunningham was actually one of the players who was on the poster. However, this left the Fever star confused.

“Why would you ever put me on it?” she asked.

What made even less sense for Cunningham is the fact that Clark wasn’t on the poster. The Fever veteran shared her brutally honest thoughts on the WNBA’s shocking decision.

“It is a joke,” Cunningham stated. “You are leaving out a generational (talent) — the best player to ever go through (the) WNBA.

“Honestly, if they were smart, they would market the [expletive] out of some of us. They don’t.”

Cunningham reiterated that the WNBA should have included Clark in the poster, which celebrates a monumental milestone for the league. She also stated that her other Fever teammates should have also made the cut.

“That should be Caitlin,” Cunningham continued. “That should be Kelsey Mitchell; that should be Aliyah Boston. I am not oblivious.”

As for her basketball, Cunningham sat out practice on Tuesday due to an illness. It is unclear if this will impact her availability for their next game.

The Fever will be on the road on Sunday to face the defending champions, the Las Vegas Aces, at T-Mobile Arena.
