The Numbers Say the Jets Should Ride Breece Hall
The Jets made a statement this offseason when they signed Breece Hall to a contract extension. They didn’t have to do it when they did, but they chose to make sure one of their best offensive players remained part of the foundation moving forward. Now comes the interesting part.
Aaron Glenn is entering his second season as head coach, Frank Reich takes over as offensive coordinator, and Geno Smith gives the offense a veteran presence at quarterback. The Jets have spent the past several months talking about becoming more physical and more consistent on offense. Looking at the roster, one thing seems obvious: if they’re going to take a step forward in 2026, Breece Hall needs to be at the center of it.
Hall has already proven he can provide at a high level as a runner and receiver. The question isn’t whether he’s capable. It’s whether the Jets are willing to lean into what he does best. I was looking through the Jets record book, and something really jumped out at me.
Hall Is Already Climbing the Jets Record Book
When Jets fans think about the franchise’s greatest running backs, the names come quickly. Curtis Martin sits alone at the top, while Freeman McNeil, Emerson Boozer, and Matt Snell all left their mark on the organization.
Hall isn’t in that conversation yet, but he’s getting there faster than many people realize. Despite losing most of his rookie season with a torn ACL, he already ranks 12th in franchise history with 3,398 rushing yards. Another productive season would move him into some pretty exclusive company.
New York Jets All-Time Rushing Leaders
| Rank | Player | Rushing Yards |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Curtis Martin | 10,302 |
| 2 | Freeman McNeil | 8,074 |
| 3 | Emerson Boozer | 5,135 |
| 4 | Matt Snell | 4,285 |
| 5 | Johnny Hector | 4,280 |
| … | … | … |
| 12 | Breece Hall | 3,398 |
If Hall rushes for another 1,000 yards this season, he’ll finish with 4,398 career rushing yards, moving all the way to fourth on the franchise’s all-time rushing list. In one season, he’d pass Johnny Hector, Matt Snell, John Riggins, Thomas Jones, Bilal Powell, Adrian Murrell, and several other familiar names, trailing only Curtis Martin, Freeman McNeil, and Emerson Boozer.
That doesn’t mean anyone is putting him ahead of Curtis Martin. Martin’s place in Jets history is secure. What it does show is just how productive Hall has already been despite everything that’s happened during the first four years of his career. He’s put up those numbers while recovering from a major knee injury, playing behind inconsistent offensive lines, and working through coaching changes and quarterback turnover.
Hall’s Value Goes Beyond Rushing Yards
What separates Hall from many of the running backs who came before him is what he brings to the passing game. The modern NFL asks running backs to do much more than carry the football. They have to protect the quarterback, catch passes, create mismatches against linebackers, and turn short throws into explosive plays. Hall checks every one of those boxes.
Receiving Production Among Notable Jets Running Backs
| Player | Receptions | Receiving Yards |
|---|---|---|
| Curtis Martin | 484 | 3,799 |
| Freeman McNeil | 268 | 2,913 |
| Breece Hall | 188 | 1,642 |
| Matt Snell | 105 | 1,228 |
| Thomas Jones | 108 | 887 |
Hall has already caught 188 passes in just four seasons. That’s remarkable considering he missed most of his rookie year. He isn’t simply a running back who can catch a screen pass once in a while. He’s a legitimate receiving weapon who can stay on the field in every situation, giving the offense flexibility without tipping its hand to the defense.
That’s one of the reasons Frank Reich feels like such a good fit. During his time in Indianapolis, Reich built offenses around talented running backs. Jonathan Taylor became one of the league’s premier backs, while Nyheim Hines carved out a significant role catching passes out of the backfield. Reich has consistently shown he’s willing to feature running backs who can impact the game in multiple ways, and Hall fits that mold perfectly.
The supporting cast around him is better, too. Geno Smith gives the Jets an experienced quarterback who doesn’t need to force plays. Garrett Wilson remains one of the league’s better young receivers, which should prevent defenses from loading the box every week. Up front, the offensive line has a chance to be the best Hall has played behind, with young tackles Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou leading the way.
That doesn’t guarantee a career year, but it gives Hall something he hasn’t consistently had since entering the league: stability.
The Opportunity Is Right in Front of Them
Nobody is suggesting Hall should carry the ball 30 times every Sunday. That’s not how most successful offenses operate anymore. The goal isn’t to wear him down. It’s to make sure your best offensive player consistently impacts the game. Maybe that means 18 carries and five catches one week. Maybe it’s 15 carries and seven receptions the next. The exact number isn’t as important as making sure Hall remains a focal point from the opening drive until the final whistle.
The Jets invested in Breece Hall because they believe he’s one of the players they can build around. Aaron Glenn is entering a pivotal second season, Frank Reich has a history of maximizing talented running backs, and the offense finally appears to have the pieces in place to support one. The numbers suggest this could be a special year for Breece Hall. Now it’s up to the Jets to make sure those numbers keep climbing.
