White Sox Rumors: These 2 catchers make a ton of sense for Chicago
The Chicago White Sox opened trade deadline week by trading for veteran right-hander José Urquidy, a low-risk move that carries intriguing upside if he can rediscover his form. While the addition adds experienced depth to the pitching staff, it shouldn’t signal the end of general manager Chris Getz’s deadline activity.
If the White Sox are serious about making a postseason push, more moves are likely still to come. One area they desperately need to see improvement in is catcher. Kyle Teel hasn’t been able to stay healthy this year, and a combination of Edgar Quero, Drew Romo, and Reese McGuire hasn’t worked out.
Fortunately, it seems like the White Sox have a few rental options to choose from, which makes sense given Teel has incredible upside when healthy. Here are two of those options.
Catchers Ryan Jeffers and Tyler Stephenson make a ton of sense for the Chicago White Sox to target at the 2026 trade deadline
Ryan Jeffers
While intra-division trades are somewhat rare, it will be intriguing to see if Chicago and Minnesota link up for a deal involving Ryan Jeffers. The 29 year old catcher is enjoying one of his best offensive seasons so far, evidenced by a .930 OPS through 48 games. Jeffers missed time earlier this year following a hamate fracture, but has been back in the big leagues since July 10.
Jeffers is playing on a $6.7 million contract that expires at the end of the season, and Chicago could ask Minnesota to absorb a portion of his remaining salary. While doing so might increase the Twins’ asking price if they decide to sell, it shouldn’t dissuade the White Sox from addressing a clear area of need ahead of the trade deadline.
Tyler Stephenson
Another right-handed catching rental who could be available at this year’s trade deadline is Tyler Stephenson. The 29-year-old is slashing his way to a .712 OPS with eight home runs and 28 RBIs this season. While his offensive ceiling may not be quite as high as Jeffers’, Stephenson would still represent a significant upgrade and would immediately become the White Sox’s top offensive option behind the plate.
Stephenson also comes with a modest financial commitment, earning $6.8 million in 2026. As a pending free agent, he’d be an affordable rental whose remaining salary shouldn’t prevent the White Sox from pursuing other upgrades before the trade deadline.
