No player in the system has made a stronger case for a major league opportunity than Owen Ayers.

A 19th-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, Ayers has gone from an intriguing organizational catcher to one of Chicago’s most important prospects. His rise through High-A, Double-A and Triple-A in 2026 has been difficult to ignore, particularly because his offensive production has developed alongside the defensive tools needed to remain behind the plate.

That matters because the Cubs could have an opening at catcher sooner than originally expected.

Chicago moved Moisés Ballesteros at the trade deadline, while veteran Carson Kelly is headed toward free agency after the season. Miguel Amaya remains part of the picture, but the Cubs suddenly have a much clearer path for Ayers to compete for major league playing time.

The challenge is obvious: Hartshorn still has developmental ground to cover. Reaching the majors in 2027 would require a fast climb through the upper minors and continued success as the quality of pitching improves.

But this is exactly why prospect timelines should be treated as estimates rather than deadlines.

If Hartshorn continues developing into a legitimate middle-of-the-order threat, the Cubs won’t keep him in the minors simply to follow a calendar. A strong enough bat has a way of creating its own opportunity.

The Cubs May Have More Options Than Expected

Ayers is clearly the closest of the three. Kepley represents the intriguing fast-track possibility, while Hartshorn would require the biggest leap.

Together, though, they illustrate why prospect development could have such a large influence on Chicago’s next offseason.

The Cubs will have opportunities to spend money and reshape the roster through trades, but they don’t necessarily have to purchase a veteran solution for every opening. Sometimes the best answer is already moving through the farm system.
