Bears’ Braxton Jones takes big step towards reclaiming LT lead

Chicago Bears offensive lineman Braxton Jones (70) blocks against the Atlanta Falcons at Soldier Field.

As the Chicago Bears go through their preseason, one of their biggest priorities will be figuring out who is starting at left tackle. Prior to picking up a knee injury, it looked like Braxton Jones’ job to lose.

While Jones was forced to leave Aug. 6’s practice early, he avoided any serious long-term injury. On Thursday, he was back on the gridiron taking part in individual drills, via Josh Buckhalter of Clocker Sports.

Jones will still need to progress to get into actual game action. But the Bears will be cautious still this early into training camp. If the tackle is able to get fully past his knee problems, it wouldn’t be long after that he’s back in the left tackle mix.

Jones was passed up at left tackle in 2025, ultimately being replaced by rookie Ozzy Trapilo. But with Trapilo suffering an Achilles injury, Jones was brought back in free agency. Now, once healthy, he’s in a position to reclaim the left tackle spot at least to open the season.

Injuries have taken a toll on Jones’ career, as he hasn’t appeared in all 17 games since his rookie season in 2022. But over his 12 games in 2024, the left tackle earned a 77.4 grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking 21/81 tackles. His 80.8 run blocking grade ranked 17th. If Jones can find his footing, it’s easy to see why the Bears were willing to give him another chance.

Even when healthy though, Jones won’t just be handed the job. He will be facing competition from Jedrick Wills and Kiran Amegadjie, both of whom should play a featured role in the preseason opener. When Jones is facing live competition again, he must prove to at least be a stronger option at left tackle to retain his starting role.

For now though, the Bears are just trying to get him back to full health. The fact Jones was able to practice on Thursday, even in a limited capacity, shows he is on the right track.
