Camp Notes: A Sloppy Day in Owings Mills
It was a wet and rainy day out at 1 Winning Drive, and as a result today’s practice session was pretty sloppy and relatively uneventful (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing).
A few of the rain-inflicted lowlights of the day included a drop from five yards away by Durham Smythe during a walkthrough, a Devontez Walker touchdown drop, and Skylar Thompson fumbling backwards twice.
On the positive side of things, rookie TE Josh Cuevas had his first standout practice. He caught a few touchdowns, and had solid hands despite the conditions. He and fellow rookie TE Matthew Hibner have traded great days so far.
Zay Flowers also had a nice day, just about 24 hours after he signed a four-year, $140 million extension. Flowers did a lot of his work today in the red zone. He had only five touchdowns a season ago, but there’s clearly been an emphasis on targeting him near the goal line.
Ja’Kobi Lane made another leaping touchdown grab in the back of the end zone today against Marlon Humphrey. Bluntly, Humphrey hasn’t had a great camp so far, and he continues to be one of the biggest question marks on the squad headed into this season.
As time goes on, I’m leaning more and more toward the Ravens keeping all four running backs. Rasheen Ali has plenty of special teams value, plus he’s looked good in camp, running one in today from a few yards out. Adam Randall’s physicality has impressed me so far as well.
Bilhal Kone had a nice red zone pass breakup against Octavian Smith Jr., who caught two touchdowns during 7-on-7s.
In general, today was a day that brought less to report. Positional drills seemed much more extensive, and after two consecutive days of pads and a more physical practice yesterday, Jesse Minter dialed back the intensity today.
