Camp Notes: Self-Inflicted Wounds Stall Offense

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

A hot morning in Owings Mills saw the Baltimore Ravens suit up in pads for a physical practice.

Following a fairly sloppy offensive performance yesterday, the errors continued today with countless pre-snap penalties on offense and several drives that stalled out in the red zone.

The offense’s failures to get in the end zone gave kicker Tyler Loop plenty of chances today, which resulted in him going seven-for-seven in team play from distances of 55, 44, 27, 30, 26, 26, and 54 yards.

Despite overall offensive struggles, wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane continued to be a bright spot and had multiple “wow” plays. He used his large frame to shield off Marlon Humphrey on one play for a reception, and later had a diving catch along the sideline.

When asked about his growing trust with quarterback Lamar Jackson, Lane said “I think I’m just doing everything to build trust in the offense as a whole. I think it goes a long way to the defensive guys to be able to trust me as well.”

Rookie running back Adam Randall flashed a few times as well, including a play in which he broke a tackle in the backfield to convert a would-be negative play into a large gain.

Second-year wide receiver LaJohntay Wester had an impressive 20-yard touchdown reception on a throw from backup quarterback Tyler Huntley.

But overall, the defense got the best of the offense for most of practice. The offensive issues seemed more self-inflicted than being overpowered by the defense, particularly the pre-snap penalties and a Huntley interception thrown right to safety Keondre Jackson.

Trey Hendrickson was quick off the edge in pass rush, and the defensive line had their way with the offensive line on most run plays.

Additional Notes

— Head Coach Jesse Minter said defensive tackle Travis Jones (pec) is getting close to returning to practice.

— Minter reiterated wide receiver Zay Flowers’s quad injury is still day-to-day and he expects him back soon.

— Defensive lineman Calais Campbell was excused from practice yesterday to attend Larry Fitzgerald’s Hall of Fame induction.

— Rookie wide receiver Elijah Sarratt said he and Lane met at the combine earlier this year and have become friends since. He said they work to push each other every day.

— Wide receivers coach Keary Colbert emphasized that he wants the receivers excelling in run blocking this year.

— Colbert, similar to running back Justice Hill yesterday, praised offensive coordinator Declan Doyle’s attention to detail.
