Camp Notes: Tale as Old as Time Around These Parts – Good Defense, or Bad Offense?
Defensive wins have been a recurring theme over the past week or so, and the trend continued during an overcast practice earlier this afternoon.
WR Rashod Bateman, CB Nate Wiggins, ILB Carl Jones, DB Jahquez Robinson, and DT Rashuan Benny were not at practice.
Zay Flowers was out at practice again today, but didn’t participate in team sessions.
The front seven had a really strong day. John Jenkins was in the middle of a few inside runs and UDFA Ethan Burke out of Texas showed off his physicality in the box.
The ball was being forced out pretty quickly, but even when the pass rush didn’t get home the coverage forced some “sacks.” The secondary looked really good again today.
Marlon Humphrey had some more good coverage reps today, though he did leave practice early.
Chandler Rivers has been maybe the most impressive defensive back during the 1-on-1s so far. It’s very easy to get beat with the field as open as it is, but Rivers is constantly on the receiver’s hip and forced an incompletion during a rep today. He also jarred a ball loose from Cornelius Johnson which popped it into the air, and Keyon Martin caught it and took it the other way.
Adisa Isaac has also been active since his return from the PUP list, and he’s looked strong and physical so far.
After a few quieter days, Ja’Kobi Lane re-emerged today, beating T.J. Tampa in 1-on-1s, and then making a nice adjustment catch deep downfield later on, though the latter would have likely been a sack in a live game.
Elijah Sarratt and LaJohntay Wester were two more young receivers who had productive days. Sarratt showed off his hands and body control when he went up to catch a fade over Keyon Martin. Wester beat Chandler Rivers during a 1-on-1, and then made a few more grabs throughout the day.
Outside of those few, the offense remained quiet.
Jesse Minter has shown off a few very well designed pressures, a few of which led to unblocked sacks today. It always makes you wonder – and it seems like we’ve been asking this question annually from Westminster/Owings Mills since the Ravens have existed – does the offense look shaky or is the defense really this good?
