Chicago Bears: Jaylon Johnson sends dire warning to front office
Despite playing in seven games and starting in six games last season, Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson is worried about his contract situation before the 2027 offseason.
Early in the offseason, Bears head coach Ben Johnson noted that both Johnson and Kyler Gordon need to stay healthy in the upcoming season, and was frustrated his top two cornerbacks were unavailable for most of last season.
Johnson was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 22 after needing surgery for a core muscle injury. He did not return until Nov. 27.
When speaking to reporters on Saturday, Johnson noted that this fall was a “contract year” for him. If the Bears aren’t ready to pay, Johnson wants to put up tape for another NFL team.
“This is definitely a contract year,” Johnson said, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “We all know with the cap hit and all that stuff. It’s definitely a contract year for me so at the end of the day, whether that’s here or somewhere else, I gotta put it on tape that I am still a top guy.”

During the 2024 offseason, Johnson signed a four-year, $76 million contract that keeps him on the Bears through the 2027 season. He will have a cap hit of $24.5 million in 2027, per Spotrac.
During an appearance on the “Rich Eisen Show” last year before training camp, Johnson noted that he was thinking about a new deal before the 2025 season.
“Just seeing a lot of the other corners getting paid — I almost feel like we might have another discussion coming up here soon,” Johnson said. “The market is moving, the market is moving.
“As long as I just keep being myself, keep playing at a high level, definitely going to have to be some more conversations coming up soon and really keep it long term. So, I’m looking forward to that.”
Johnson earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2023 and made the Pro Bowl in 2023 and 2024.
Johnson’s contract is another issue for general manager Ryan Poles to consider next offseason. He could have to juggle contracts for Darnell Wright, Caleb Williams, and Rome Odunze at the same time.
