Chicago Bears to cut bait with 2024 3rd-round pick

Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears, Bears safeties

The Chicago Bears have parted ways with a couple of offensive tackles this weekend as they trim the roster to 53 players by Sunday’s 6 p.m. EST deadline.

The Bears released Jedrick Wills Jr., brought in to compete for the starting left tackle job with Ozzy Trapilo recovering from an injury from the postseason.

Per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Bears are set to release Kiran Amegadjie.

“The Bears are expected to release offensive lineman Kiran Amegadjie, sources tell CBS Sports,” Zenitz posted on X. “The former Yale star was a 2024 third-round draft pick. He was a 2023 FCS All-American at Yale.”

Per Zenitz, the Bears are expected to try and sign Wills back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

The Bears selected Amegadjie with a Day 2 pick despite the offensive lineman suffering a quad injury in his final season at Yale, which caused him to miss much of his rookie year. He appeared in six games and started in one game during his career with the Bears.

Offensive tackle was a concern for head coach Ben Johnson all through the preseason. After Saturday night’s win over the Tennessee Titans, Johnson said he felt better about offensive tackle as the team prepares to finalize the roster.

“This game was going to be a big part of the equation, so we got to go back and look at this tape,” Johnson said, via USA Today. “I think we probably feel better about the tackle conversation right now than safety.

“Like I said, we’ll have some good conversations on that and see how that unfolds, but a lot of big decisions to be made in the morning. It’s always a tough time of the preseason just because you know it’s coming around the corner here.”

Chicago will likely start Braxton Jones at left tackle until Trapilo is ready to return. With Wills and Amegadjie released, it appears Trapilo will be ready to play sooner rather than later.
