Chicago Bears trade pass-rusher for 5-foot-9 cornerback
The Chicago Bears are apparently calling it quits on defensive tackle Gervon Devter.
The 2023 second-round pick did not make it to Tennessee for a joint practice and preseason game against the Titans as he battled a hamstring injury. The Bears received trade calls for Dexter, who recorded the defense’s second-most sacks (6) in 2025.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bears traded Gervon Dexter for cornerback Clark Phillips III.
“Trade: Bears are sending defensive tackle Gervon Dexter to the Atlanta Falcons, per his agent Drew Rosenhaus,” Schefter posted on X. “Trade terms, per source: Bears receive CB Clark Phillips III and a fifth-round pick. Falcons receive DT Gervon Dexter.”
Dexter recorded 115 tackles and 13.5 sacks in his first three seasons in the league.

Last week, Bears head coach Ben Johnson suggested the interior defensive line was better than they were getting credit for this summer. Grady Jarrett, Jordan van den Berg, Jaden Loving, and Kentavius Street have looked solid in training camp.
It remains to be seen how they’ll play against better competition when the regular season starts.
The Bears needed depth for the secondary, and they added Phillips, a fourth-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. The five-foot-nine, 185-pound cornerback missed much of last year with a triceps injury. He’s appeared in 28 games and started seven games, recording 50 tackles, four tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and one interception.
The Bears got poor value in return for Dexter, which shouldn’t be too big of a surprise for anyone who’s been paying attention to Chicago lately.
Chicago is getting a reserve cornerback and Day 3 pick for a starting defensive tackle, albeit one that the Bears didn’t appear to want to pay in free agency during the next offseason.
It’s a questionable move with a defensive line that doesn’t spark fear in the heart of any offensive line.
