Chicago Cubs rookie gets high praise from Alex Bregman, “He’s gonna be a superstar”
The Chicago Cubs have had a lot of good fortune, even in a season overloaded with injury and misfortune. There is, after all, a reason the team is 20 games over .500 and atop the NL Wild Card race despite multiple high-profile injuries.

One of this season’s good-news stories is a bit of a surprise—Pedro Ramirez.
The 22-year-old prospect was well-regarded in the Cubs organization, although not especially earmarked for big things in the big leagues. But the switch-hitting Venezuelan seemingly flipped a switch over the last year or so and turned himself into one of the organization’s most valued prospects. During spring training this season, he turned heads and captured the notice of manager Craig Counsell, who later said that Ramirez was big league-ready right out of the pre-season.
“He’s a big-leaguer,” Counsell said at the time. “He’s going to be a good big-leaguer. He’s got a really good head on his shoulders, really good baseball intelligence. It’s great to see him off to a good start and really taking another step.”
Given his overall development, it wasn’t a surprise that he’d make the major league roster at some point in 2026. And when Matt Shaw went down to injury, it was a no-brainer that Ramirez—who profiles as a similar multi-tool, multi-role asset as Shaw—would get the call.
Ramirez has now firmly established himself as a big league asset. Over 52 games, but with limited plate appearances, he’s hitting .285 with 2 home runs and 15 RBIs. On the field, he’s played second base, third base, first base, and left field and has done well at all positions.

Teammates have noticed Ramirez as someone who plays with the poise and baseball IQ of a veteran, but with the enthusiasm of a kid.
Third baseman Alex Bregman would even go on record recently with high praise, predicting big things for the rookie.
“Pedro Ramirez, in my opinion, I think, is gonna be a superstar,” Bregman said in a post-game interview with TNT Sports.
Finding an every day spot

Talk is already circulating regarding possible every day roles for the young talent. With Bregman at third and Nico Hoerner at second—Ramirez’s two strongest positions—playing time will be very limited there. One possible option, though, is putting him in a corner outfield spot as a fill-in for either Ian Happ or Seiya Suzuki, who both become free agents at the end of this season.
Per Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic:
“The Cubs have been so impressed with Ramírez that they’re already starting to wonder how he fits into their future. With Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki heading into free agency this winter, the Cubs are getting comfortable with the idea of giving Ramírez an everyday role in a corner outfield spot.”
Whatever the case, the Cubs have been impressed by what they’ve seen and clearly feel that they are a better team with Ramirez around.
