Controversial Fever-Sky game draws intriguing update

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham (8) and guard Caitlin Clark

The Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky clashed on Saturday and remain a big topic of discussion among WNBA fans. Not many expected it to be as controversial as it turned out to be, but things changed late in the first quarter. DiJonai Carrington committed a Flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham, which continues to draw a lot of attention.

Indiana ultimately won 90-86 to snap its two-game skid. Kelsey Mitchell produced a game-high 27 points, with Caitlin Clark contributing 26 of her own. Cunningham finished with just three points and one rebound, but Aliyah Boston backed the dynamic backcourt duo with a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Chicago’s Natasha Cloud and Rachel Banham led the team with 17 points each, but they couldn’t secure a victory. Carrington exited with eight points.

Fever-Sky game draws high viewership

Saturday’s matchup reportedly drew an average of 2.6 million viewers on ABC. It peaked at 3.1 million, and became the second most-watched game of the season.

The Fever and Sky became rivals when Clark and Angel Reese entered the WNBA in 2024. However, with the star forward already playing for the Atlanta Dream, the rivalry wasn’t as heated anymore. That changed over the weekend, with fans already anticipating another intense meeting on Aug. 23.

Many are intrigued with how Carrington and Cunningham will perform when they share the court again. Indiana will aim to end its four-game road trip strong as it tries to position itself better for the playoffs. Chicago, on the other hand, still has a chance to qualify for the season but needs to start stringing more wins together.

The highly anticipated game will tip off at 7 p.m. ET at Wintrust Arena. NBC will broadcast the game live, and it could shatter the July 12 record between the Fever and Las Vegas Aces. It drew an average of 2.64 million on NBC.
