When Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles extended right tackle Darnell Wright recently, it wasn’t just a contract announcement. Instead, it was a moment of vindication. It also tied together one of the most controversial decisions of his early tenure.

Moreover, it showed why he trusted his own evaluation when the rest of the football world screamed otherwise.

Poles signed Wright to a 4-year, $116 million deal, with $93 million guaranteed. He is now the highest-paid right tackle in NFL history, and has the most guaranteed money of any offensive lineman ever.

Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter was seen not only as the most talented defensive prospect in the class, but also the top overall prospect in the entire draft.

On January 15th, 2023, after the University of Georgia celebrated its back-to-back national championship, a tragic car accident occurred in Athens. They were street racing with Carter, who was driving in a separate vehicle. The police arrested Carter. 

Then on March 1st, he was forced to leave the NFL Combine when the Athens-Clarke County Police Department issued an arrest warrant for him. Later, on Georgia’s pro day on March 15th, he had a disastrous workout in front of many scouts and executives. He could not even finish positional drills and opted out of essential testing like the 40-yard dash, cone drills, and jump tests.

The Bears held the first overall pick in 2023, ended up trading with the Carolina Panthers, who took Alabama QB Bryce Young. The Bears had the Panthers’ pick at 9th, and Carter was still available. Instead of turning in the card for him, the Bears made a second move by trading down with the Philadelphia Eagles, who had the 10th overall pick, and took a chance on him.

The Bears were in a position to draft Carter not only once, but twice. And they passed on him both times.

Carter’s talent was undeniable. But his off-the-field baggage was undeniable too. So when Poles selected Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright one pick after Carter, he wore the criticism for it.

Fast‑forward to this offseason, Jalen Carter signed a massive extension with the Eagles, proof that his talent translated. In addition, Philadelphia’s infrastructure helped him thrive.

But then, Wright earned a record‑setting extension of his own. The highest‑paid right tackle in football. A player who has become everything Poles projected him to be: a tackle who is dominant in both run blocking and pass protection.
