Jason Sanders Is the Last Jets Kicker Standing, But Has He Won the Job?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Jason Sanders Jason Sanders Jason Sanders

There are reports saying the Jets will waive Cade York on Tuesday, leaving Jason Sanders as the only kicker currently on the roster. That ends the training camp battle between the two, but let’s take a look at how the competition went. The Jets could certainly add another kicker as players become available around the league. Based on what we watched throughout training camp, that possibility shouldn’t be dismissed. Sanders had some good days, but he also had some misses, including a rough performance on Monday when he had a chance to put some distance between himself and York.

Jason Sanders Arrives With an NFL Track Record

The Jets signed Jason Sanders in June after moving on from Younghoe Koo. Sanders came to the Jets with seven seasons of experience in Miami, an 84.6 percent career field goal percentage and a first-team All-Pro selection in 2020. There was also a question surrounding him when he arrived. Sanders missed the entire 2025 season with a hip injury, so training camp wasn’t just about beating out York. It was also an opportunity to show that he was healthy and could return to being the kicker he had been in Miami.

Sanders vs. York at Jets Camp

Once Jets camp started, this turned into a legitimate competition. Sanders had the experience, while York consistently showed off a big leg. We watched the competition throughout camp, and there were several times when I changed my mind about who was ahead. Here are some of the kicking results we tracked in our Jets camp reports:

  • July 30: Sanders went 5-of-6, missing from 47. York went 6-of-6.
  • August 2: Sanders went 7-of-8, with his only miss coming from approximately 60 yards. York went 6-of-7.
  • August 8: Both kickers went 5-of-5.
  • August 17: Sanders went 7-of-8, missing only from 53. York struggled and went 5-of-8.
  • August 19: York responded by going 5-of-5 from 35, 45, 50, 55 and 60 yards. Sanders went 4-of-5, missing from 55.
  • August 24: York went 3-of-5. Sanders followed by going just 2-of-5.

The competition really did go back and forth. Sanders had one of his strongest days on August 17 when he went 7-of-8 while York struggled at 5-of-8. At that point it felt like Sanders might finally be taking control of the competition.

Two days later, York flipped it right back. He went 5-of-5 from 35, 45, 50, 55 and 60 yards. The 60-yarder was right down the middle and, from our vantage point, looked like it would have been good from several yards farther. Sanders wasn’t bad that day at 4-of-5, but York clearly won the day.

Monday Didn’t Settle Anything

Monday seemed like it might finally give us some clarity. York kicked first and went 3-of-5, missing from 37 and 42 yards. Sanders then had five consecutive attempts of his own and an opportunity to take advantage of York’s misses.

Instead, Sanders was worse:

  • Made from 32 yards
  • Missed from 37 yards
  • Missed from 42 yards
  • Made from 47 yards
  • Missed from 52 yards

That left Sanders at 2-of-5 and the two kickers at a combined 5-of-10. Less than 24 hours later, the Jets made their decision on York and waived him.

Has Jason Sanders Actually Won the Job?

Sanders is the last kicker standing, but those aren’t necessarily the same words as “Jason Sanders has won the job.” He has the NFL experience and has had some very good days during camp, but there have been enough misses to leave the door open for another move. Roster cuts around the NFL will give the Jets an opportunity to look at other kickers, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they do exactly that. They could also decide that Sanders experience and track record are enough to move forward with him.

What we know for sure is that Cade York won’t be the Jets kicker. Sanders is still here, and for now the job belongs to him. Whether he is the kicker standing on the sideline when the Jets open the regular season is the next question.
