OTL: With Questions Surrounding Wiggins’ Health, CB Depth Looms Large
As the start of preseason play approaches, Baltimore received another injury scare on Tuesday. As Zay Flowers returned to practice after his injury scare last week, the fear moved to the other side of the ball:
Ravens CB Nate Wiggins was carted off the field an hour into Tuesday’s practice after suffering what looked to be a left leg/knee injury.
The 2024 first-round pick couldn’t put any weight on his left leg when heading into the team facility. He had his arms draped over trainers…

Ravens CB Nate Wiggins was carted off the field about 45 minutes into practice after he went down in endzone while covering Ja’Kobi Lane in one on ones. Looked like left knee/leg. Was in ton of pain. Was helped off cart and into building.

Regardless of how you feel about Wiggins’ production in his first two professional years, there’s no doubt any long-term injury would be a major blow to the Ravens’ secondary. At the time of writing, though, there’s little known about the third-year CB’s timetable:
Jesse Minter on Nate Wiggins: “I don’t have a ton of information yet.”
Minter added, “I think there’s optimism.”
Wiggins was carted off at practice with what looked like a left leg/knee injury.
Minter said he has no timetable on Wiggins.

Jesse Minter said there’s not a lot of information yet on CB Nate Wiggins, but did indicate there’s early optimism.
Ravens will know more soon on his status, and Minter has confidence in the CB room.

Luckily, we did get a positive update later in the evening:
No structural damage for Wiggins. Good news for Baltimore. https://t.co/K9GzVSbjfc
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 11, 2026
Importantly, Darin McCann notes that this type of injury is why HC Jesse Minter was the chosen replacement for John Harbaugh:
The Wiggins injury is scary, and it truly sucks for him going into his year-three season. If this is a long-term injury, well, that is rotten.
However, this was why the coaching change was made. It’s time to overcome, scheme to fit the problem and go forward.— Darin J. McCann (@DarinMccann) August 11, 2026
The past few years, Minter has been lauded for his ability to maximize the talent afforded to him on the defensive side of the ball. That’s especially true of his secondaries, where there were few household names beyond S Derwin James. Alongside Minter, the addition of Mike Mickens to his staff looks even bigger.
Baltimore may still have more talent than the Chargers did on the back end, but Minter will have increased responsibility. Hopefully Mickens can help relieve some of the stress:
Hope Nate heals!
Not doing the thing we did with WRs and believing in late picks..
BUTTTT
Look at Jesse’s CB last year.
You don’t know any of them and he still had a great defense

While the CB room itself is less impressive, this makes the addition of Jaylinn Hawkins even more important. If Wiggins misses time, the ability to use S Kyle Hamilton as a true chess piece will be paramount:
On a scale of 1-10, how confident would you be in this potential #Ravens Week 1 secondary
RCB: Chidobe Awuzie
LCB: Marlon Humphrey
Nickel: Kyle Hamilton
FS: Jaylinn Hawkins

Then again, how do we feel about CB Marlon Humphrey? Fans have noted the number of times the veteran seemed to be getting beat so far in Training Camp, while real superstars have had success against him in recent years:

I think the truth is somewhere in between, with Humphrey being a reliable veteran – that shouldn’t be relied upon too much:
A few things. Marlo has already talked about how the previous coaches altered his technique, which Woodson also echoed. So that part gets fixed.
I also think they use him more strategically.
The CB depth is very exciting. They have a nice mix between outside, safety & slot. https://t.co/59H9QhcWRZ

With that in mind, T.J. Tampa is the talk of the town. According to Jeff Zrebiec, teams have been calling about Tampa, but to no avail:
The Ravens have gotten trade calls on CB T.J. Tampa over the last 10 months, but have been reluctant to move him, per @jeffzrebiec pic.twitter.com/qKhIJxpiEC

There’s been some good buzz surrounding Tampa this offseason, especially in regards to his fit in Minter’s scheme. Though largely unproven, there’s precedent to believe he could excel:
Was talking about Tampa with @NflOgden on the upcomong @UKRavens pod.
Think he’s a great fit for Minter’s defense so glad that they have resisted what I assume are pretty modest trade offers. https://t.co/qq1ulX8fMj

TJ Tampa was the highest rated defender vs the Chiefs in week 4:
– 71.2 Defensive Grade (1st)
– 76.8 Coverage Grade (1st)Although it was a rough outing from the defense, some of the young guys showed up. pic.twitter.com/UPdRf0zoYm
— STONE (@stone_2x) October 1, 2025
Right now, it seems he’ll have his chance:
TJ Tampa is about to get his chance to shine. No one on this defense fits Minters system as good as Tampa, good thing the Ravens stood firm against the trade offers.
— STONE (@stone_2x) August 11, 2026
Alternatively, Baltimore could look to supplement the position through free agency. There’s always cap casualties who could be brought in for additional depth, but there’s already some interesting names available:
Top CB free agents available:
Marshon Lattimore
Terrion Arnold
Kenny Moore II
Trevon Diggs
Adoree’ Jackson
Tre’Davious White
Jeff Okudah
Jalyn Armour-Davis
Michael Davis
Jalen Mills

Still, the clock’s ticking on getting well-established veterans into the building:
Sources: The #Giants will host CB Terrion Arnold for a visit on Wednesday.
The former #Lions‘ 1st-round pick has been receiving heavy interest, having already visited the Texans and Seahawks, as well as the Saints today, with more teams wanting to bring him in. https://t.co/umGnWfkKlD pic.twitter.com/wzHIBRINsb

In my eyes, free agency won’t do enough to replace the potential Wiggins had to lead Baltimore’s CB room this year, and therefore shouldn’t be the route taken. I’d enter the season with Marlon Humphrey, Chidobe Awuzie and Tampa taking the outside spots, with Kyle Hamilton, Chandler Rivers and Keyon Martin manning the slot. From there, continue to see where Wiggins stands and hope for the best.
If guys like Tampa, Bilhal Kone and Roger Longerbeam can develop into strong contributors, great. If not, let GM Eric DeCosta work some trade deadline magic to bolster the secondary for a playoff run.
How would you handle the CB spot moving forward?
