Potential Salary Cap Implications of Rashod Bateman’s Arrest

A relatively quiet, feel-good offseason for the Ravens was interrupted late last week with the news that WR Rashod Bateman had been arrested in June on three (3) charges stemming from a family violence incident involving his 3-year-old daughter and the daughter’s mother.  This would seem to explain Bateman’s absence from much of this offseason’s OTAs.

Bateman, often a lightning rod of discontent amongst Ravens fans, now faces an uncertain future as the NFL will most certainly be looking into the situation.  Even if charges are reduced, dropped or Bateman enters some sort of court-authorized diversion program, the NFL has shown that it will still apply a suspension, so it seems very likely, regardless of the actual outcome of the legal proceedings, that Bateman will be suspended from 2 to 4 games at some point in the future.

As far as releasing Bateman, as many fans are calling for, this seems unlikely given that the team has known about this since the incident in June and have seemingly been supporting him throughout the offseason.  With that said, as more information potentially comes to light, that support could certainly change (see Rice, Ray).

Bateman signed a 3-year, $36.75M contract extension in June of 2025, which followed his 2-year, $12.872M extension signed the prior year.  Under the terms of the new extension, Bateman received a $8M signing bonus in 2025 and a $4M option bonus this past spring.  His 2026 compensation – $2M salary and $500K per game roster bonuses – is fully guaranteed and $3.5M of his $7.5M 2027 salary is presently injury guaranteed, but will become fully guaranteed next March (if still on the team).

If the Ravens were to decide to move on from Bateman, they would likely – per their rights under the CBA – void the present and future guarantees due to the arrest, but would still have a sizable amount of dead money to deal with.  Keep in mind that dead money comes from money already paid to the player, in this case yearly bonus prorations from his signing and option bonuses, so any release or suspension does not directly affect or reduce the amount of dead money that would hit the Cap.

So, if released – and the guarantees voided – the Ravens would actually create $2,382,353 in Cap 2026 space since we are now post-June 1, but they would still have to carry $3,798,334 in dead money on the 2026 Cap (again due to his 2026 bonus prorations) and $7.95M on the 2027 Cap (his 2027-29 bonus prorations).

A trade of Bateman would create the same Cap results.

If the Ravens were to keep Bateman, which presently seems like the most likely outcome, they would still likely void his present and future guarantees.  However, if they do plan to have him around for 2026, voiding the 2026 guaranteed money is of little consequence, but would have the effect of removing the guarantees from 2027, making it easier to move on in 2027 if the situation warranted.

Bateman will likely be free to continue playing until the criminal charges are resolved, as the NFL has usually waited until all legal matters are resolved before issuing a suspension.  This could mean that Bateman isn’t suspended until after the 2026 season depending on how quickly (or slowly) the Georgia court moves.  Of course, any resolution of the matter (via a plea deal or pre-trial diversion) before or during the 2026 season would likely trigger an immediate suspension.  So, if suspended in 2026, Bateman would lose $140,522 per game suspended and the Ravens would receive an immediate Cap credit in that amount.

If released prior to a suspension, the Ravens would not receive any such Cap credits because there is no salary being paid at that point (although, in the unlikely event he was released without voiding the guaranteed 2026 salary, they would receive such credits).

In addition, if Bateman remains on the team and is suspended by the NFL, the Ravens would be also able to seek forfeiture of some of the bonus money paid to Bateman.  The forfeiture amount would depend on the number of games suspended and would affect his 2024 Signing Bonus and his 2025 Signing Bonus.  His 2026 Option Bonus, per his contract, is not subject to bonus forfeiture.

Without getting too deep into the minutia of the numbers, if Bateman were to be suspended for four (4) games in 2026, the Ravens would receive a total credit of $645,667, which would count as an adjustment on the 2027 Cap (420,384) and salary reductions in 2027, 2028 and 2029 ($75,094 each year).  If Bateman’s suspension was for 2 games, instead of 4, the numbers would be one-half of those listed.

So, to summarize all of the above, and assuming the Ravens do not part ways with Bateman, the Ravens will:

• Receive an immediate Cap credit for the number of games lost to the suspension;
• Likely void the future guarantees (2027); and
• Receive credits in 2027-2029 for the amount of the bonus forfeiture (TBD based on number of games suspended).
