Real Talent Doesn't Require A Public Relations Department

Before the Yankees even threw a pitch tonight, the mood around the Bronx had already changed. No, it wasn’t just because George Lombard Jr. had finally arrived. It was because Anthony Volpe was gone. That’s a fact folks, and I speak honesty so let’s stop pretending otherwise. 

The excitement wasn’t simply about baseball’s top shortstop prospect getting his chance. The real electricity came from the fact that the Yankees had finally waved the white flag on one of the most stubborn, tone-deaf personnel decisions in recent franchise history. Fans weren’t celebrating someone getting called up. They were celebrating that someone else had finally been taken out of the lineup.

That says everything.

The game itself wasn’t loaded with drama, but George Lombard Jr. made sure nobody would forget it. In the fifth inning, Hunter Dobbins tried to sneak an 81-mph sweeper past him.

Bad idea.

Lombard unloaded, launching the pitch into the left-field seats for his first Major League hit and first Major League home run. The swing was smooth. The reaction was genuine. The smile stretched ear to ear. It looked… natural. And that word matters.

Because today Aaron Boone said something that should make every Yankees fan stop and think. His message to Lombard before the game?

“Go be you.”

Really? Go be you? That’s fascinating. Because that’s the exact opposite of what this organization spent over three years doing with Anthony Volpe. Volpe was never allowed to simply just be Anthony Volpe… that’s because they manufactured that poor kid. I would even suggest they ruined him. Remember, the Yankees needed Volpe to become the golden child. it was forced. The face of the future. The captain-in-waiting. The defensive wizard. The homegrown superstar who justified every scouting report, every promotional campaign, every spring training interview and every ridiculous sound bite coming out of the front office.

Remember when Boone called him “f-ing elite?” Of course you do. That wasn’t confidence. That was advertising.

It always felt like Boone was reading from a script handed to him upstairs. Every time Volpe struggled, the talking points stayed exactly the same. Ignore what your eyes are seeing. Trust us. He’s elite. He’s special. He’s untouchable. Fans were told to believe the slogan instead of the baseball Volpe was playing until it was too obvious, he wasn’t close to ready. Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone spent years trying to convince everyone that the emperor was wearing pinstripes.

The problem? The emperor forgot his bat. Meanwhile, George Lombard Jr. arrives with none of that baggage. Nobody is trying to sell him. Nobody is demanding that fans buy into a marketing campaign (Well, not they are of course). Nobody is asking the media to lower expectations while simultaneously calling him a franchise cornerstone.

They’re simply saying… “Go be you.”

Why?

Because real talent doesn’t require a public relations department.

Watching tonight’s game, you could almost feel the tension disappear. The dugout looked looser. The at-bats looked freer. The energy was different. Even Boone looked like someone who wasn’t managing every pitch with one eye on the front office.

And that’s because Lombard doesn’t feel like an obligation. He feels like a baseball player.

He earned every rung of the ladder. He developed in the minors. He learned the game. He wasn’t rushed because somebody needed a feel-good story for Opening Day. 

Will he struggle? Absolutely. Every young player does. But there’s a huge difference between allowing a gifted prospect to experience growing pains and desperately hoping a player eventually becomes the guy you’ve spent three years insisting he already is. That’s where the Yankees completely lost the plot with Volpe.

Every ground ball became an adventure. Every at-bat felt like a coin flip. If we’re being honest, and I am, it wasn’t just the fans sitting on pins and needles. Most likely 3 years in it was Brian Cashman too.

Because every error…

Every strikeout…

Every ugly night chipped away at a narrative the organization had spent years manufacturing.

Lombard doesn’t need a narrative.

He belongs. That’s what stood out tonight. Not just because he homered. Because nothing about him looked forced. He looked comfortable and confident. He looked exactly like a kid who has spent his entire life preparing for this moment instead of trying to live up to somebody else’s press release.

People love tossing around Derek Jeter comparisons, and I hate doing it because they’re unfair. But here’s what I will say.

George Lombard Jr. looks real. He’s authentic. He’s playing baseball instead of acting in a Yankees commercial. And that’s why this feels different.

What happens next? Nobody knows. Baseball has always been unpredictable. Just ask Wally Pipp. Sometimes history changes because a player gets hurt. Sometimes it changes because an organization finally runs out of excuses.

Maybe tonight was one of those moments. Maybe years from now we’ll look back at Anthony Volpe being sent to Scranton the same way previous generations remembered lineup changes that nobody appreciated at the time. Either way, one thing became crystal clear.

The Yankees finally put the right shortstop on the field. It just took Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone about two years longer than it should have.

Congratulations, George Lombard Jr. You didn’t get here because of hype and a false narrative. You didn’t get here because of slogans. You didn’t get here because someone in the front office kept insisting you were something you hadn’t yet proven.

You got here because you earned it.

Now go be you.

The funny thing is… that might be the one piece of advice this organization should’ve been giving its young players all along.
