The “Final” 53 Man Roster Includes Surprises

The Kid From Nowhere, The Longhorn Who Wouldn’t Leave

Cutdown weekend in Owings Mills is usually about as suspenseful as a Ravens Flock Facebook debate over Lamar’s MVP credentials. You know the script. Fifty of the fifty-three names write themselves, an undrafted kid sneaks on because that’s just what this organization does, and we all move on to Week 1.

Not this year. Jesse Minter’s first cutdown as head coach delivered a genuine stunner at the most important position in sports, a couple of draft picks kicked to the curb, and a kicker situation that should have every last one of us reaching for the antacids.

Let’s get into it.

Three Quarterbacks. Yes, Really.

Joe Fagnano wasn’t supposed to be here. He was a camp arm, a guy whose name half the beat corps couldn’t pronounce in July. And now? The undrafted rookie and August sensation made the cut after leading the NFL in passing yards this preseason. Fagnano completed 56 of 75 passes for 509 yards with three touchdowns against one interception, and his 74.7% completion rate and command of the offense made exposing him to waivers too risky.

That last part matters. This wasn’t sentimentality — it was self-defense. Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic pointed to the quarterback-needy Dolphins as a team to keep in mind as the Ravens pondered Fagnano’s status. Eric DeCosta wasn’t about to gift-wrap this kid for an AFC rival. So the Ravens swallowed hard and kept three quarterbacks — Lamar, Snoop Huntley, and the kid from nowhere. When’s the last time a UDFA quarterback forced this front office’s hand like that? I’ll wait.

And Fagnano wasn’t even the only undrafted rookie to crash the party. Outside linebacker Ethan Burke also made Baltimore’s roster. Another year, more undrafted players making the Ravens’ 53. The Texas product and Maryland native simply refused to be cut, and his August tape made the decision for the coaches. The Wizard of Oz built this franchise on finding gold in the discount bin, and DeCosta keeps the tradition humming.

The Guys Who Didn’t Make It — And Should Sting

Now for the uncomfortable part. Burke making it came at a cost, and his name is Adisa Isaac. Burke’s emergence contributed to Baltimore waiving Isaac, a 2024 third-round pick who appeared in only four regular-season games during his first two years. Two years, a third-round investment, four games. That’s not a cut, folks — that’s a sunk-cost admission. Credit to the new regime for not letting draft capital cloud the evaluation, but that one leaves a mark on the scouting department’s ledger.

It wasn’t just Isaac. Cornerback Robert Longerbeam, the 2025 sixth-round pick who was hoping to make an impact in his first healthy season, failed to separate himself from the pack and got cut. And this year’s seventh-rounders? Gone before Labor Day — a rarity for a franchise that almost never whiffs on keeping its own picks through the first cutdown.

Then there’s the Diego Pounds situation, which is peak DeCosta. Pounds had the second-highest Pro Football Focus pass-blocking grade of any offensive tackle in the NFL this preseason, and the Ravens flipped him to Kansas City for a conditional 2028 sixth-round pick because Carson Vinson won the backup left tackle and possible swing tackle spot. Turning a roster casualty into a draft pick instead of a waiver-wire freebie? That’s the Baltimore way. Ditto C.J. Okoye, shipped to New York to reunite with John Harbaugh, with a 2028 seventh-round pick heading back to Baltimore.

The Elephant in the Room Wears No. 9’s Old Cleats

Now, the part that has to be keeping Minter and his staff up at night. Tyler Loop survived. He joins rookie punter Ryan Eckley and veteran long snapper Nick Moore in a specialist group that will remain under scrutiny entering the regular season — and “scrutiny” is doing some heavy lifting there. Loop made just two of four field goals in the finale to finish 5-for-8 during the preseason. Even Minter couldn’t muster a full-throated endorsement, saying “I think you want to see makes in games, and so it’s something we’ll continue to look at”. For two decades we never once thought about the kicker position in this town. Now it’s the roster’s loudest question mark. Bring in competition. Like, yesterday.

The Bottom Line

The Ravens kept Nnamdi Madubuike on the active roster despite uncertain Week 1 readiness, and Randall, the fifth-round rookie back who flashed in the preseason, landed on IR — so expect more churn before the opener. This roster is deep, hungry, and just ruthless enough at the margins to make you believe the new regime means business. Fagnano and Burke earned their lockers. Isaac and Longerbeam are cautionary tales.

January will tell us the rest.

It always does.
