Chicago Bears add key enforcer to injury report
The Chicago Bears have another player in the secondary battling an injury before the team starts their season against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
On Wednesday, the Bears revealed backup quarterback Tyson Bagent was listed as a non-participant due to a back injury. Receiver Rome Odunze was listed as a limited participant due to a calf issue. Left tackle Ozzy Trapilo was listed as a limited participant due to a knee injury.
On Thursday, the Bears added safety Xavier Woods to the injury report for having a groin injury. He was listed as a limited participant, which is good news for his availability against the Panthers. The status of Bagent, Odunze, and Trapilo did not change, though Odunze returned to practice after being a non-participant on Tuesday.
The Bears signed Woods this summer after Coby Bryant suffered a hyperextended knee that is expected to sideline him for the next few months. Chicago was expected to start Woods alongside rookie first-round pick Dillon Thieneman.
Chicago Bears HC Dennis Allen on Xavier Woods

In August, Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen noted Woods is a player that can fit his scheme.
“He’s a veteran player,” Allen said of Woods. “He’s played a lot of football, been in a few different schemes. He’s been a productive player. (Pass game coordinator / defensive backs coach) Al (Harris) had him in Dallas (Cowboys), so there’s some familiarity there with him.”
“And, I just think, right now, we needed another veteran piece back there in the back end, specifically at the safety position.”
The Bears secondary has been hit with injuries during training camp. Chicago will be without cornerback Kyler Gordon for at least its first four games as he recovers from a soft-tissue injury.
In addition to Thieneman and Woods, the Bears have undrafted rookie free agent Skyler Thomas and Elijah Hicks at safety on the 53-man roster.
