Chicago Bears’ D’Andre Swift has Ryan Poles pondering extension entering contract year

Running back D’Andre Swift is entering the final season of his three-year contract with the Chicago Bears. General manager Ryan Poles will soon have to make a serious decision about Swift’s future.

Poles is clearly a fan of Swift’s game and how he has prepared for the 2026 season. The GM also made it clear that the team is considering an extension. But it’s a multi-faceted project to actually get the running back’s signature on paper, via the GM’s Tuesday press conference.

“It’s definitely something we need to look at, we will look at,” Poles said of Swift’s future. “I think he’s done a great job, I love his approach to this offseason. He looks amazing, second year in the system. The combinations of having [Eric Bieniemy] and [Eric] Studesville has been awesome for him. I like where he’s at right now.”

“This is where this job gets tough, trying to figure out how you want to allocate everything,” the GM continued. “Not only for now but into the future. We’ll have those conversations and see where we want to go with it. But I love Swifty, I love the way he is working.”

There’s no guarantee the Bears actually sign Swift to an extension. But based on his recent play, it’s a thought that would be impossible not to cross Poles’ mind.

Head coach Ben Johnson running the show proved to be a massive boon for Swift. In turn, the running back has clearly earned his head coach’s respect. While his looming free agency may cast some dark clouds, player and coach are more focused on winning.

During the 2025 campaign, Swift turned 223 carries into a career-high 1,087 yards and nine touchdowns. He added another 299 yards and a touchdown. His two years with the Bears, covering 33 games, has resulted in 2,046 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns alongside 685 yards and a score through the air.

Chicago has created a two-headed monster in Swift and former seventh-round pick Kyle Monangai. In their debut season, the Bears ranked third in rushing, averaging 144.5 yards per game. As the franchise tries to go on another playoff run, they’re looking for their ground game to once again be a force.

If so, Swift’s price tag will only go up. But Poles is well aware of what the running back brings to the table and the player he has transformed into with the Bears.
