Chicago Bulls star Josh Giddey provides major update on health following ankle surgery

Josh Giddey, Chicago Bulls

In about a month, the NBA preseason will begin.

The Chicago Bulls will look to build on a challenging yet promising 2025-26 campaign. While they didn’t win many games, the young core seemed to take a step in the right direction. The roster also looks completely different this year thanks to new general manager Bryson Graham.

Graham has wasted no time during his brief tenure as GM, bringing a talented group of free agents and draft picks to the Bulls in 2026. He also hired former NBA champion Tiago Splitter as head coach, a move that many across the league viewed as underrated.

Norman Powell signed a 2-year, $45 million deal with the Bulls this past summer, bringing veteran leadership at guard.

The Bulls also acquired Nic Claxton from Brooklyn in a trade, finally addressing the center issues that have plagued the team for the past few seasons. He’ll bring interior defense and rebounding to a group that needs both.

Lastly, in the 2026 NBA draft, the Bulls picked Caleb Wilson 4th overall out of the University of North Carolina. Wilson is already a fan favorite and is earning praise from his teammates and coaches. This group’s success largely depends on Wilson and whether he can become the superstar player this organization has been searching for.

This team has all the makings of a feel-good story, as long as the youth’s progression continues to trend upward.

The roster has plenty of young talent, and now has a nice balance of veteran leadership and new faces.

How they will all gel and play together is an entirely different discussion.

Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey provides update on ankle injury

Even with all of the new additions, the Chicago Bulls will still lean heavily on their established youth. Matas Buzelis had a strong sophomore NBA season, doubling his averages across the board. A third-year breakout would be huge for this young squad.

However, the best and most important player on the roster is young guard Josh Giddey.

Giddey underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle in May 2026, addressing the lingering issues and preventing further complications. The Australian has dealt with many injuries in his young NBA career and should be more durable this season after the surgery.

Daniel Benjamin of Yahoo Sports asked Giddey about his progression and how he felt following the operation.

“Yeah, I feel good. My first surgery, and it’s obviously a challenging time whenever you’re injured,” Giddey said. “But to go through a surgery, then have to rehab can be tough. I was lucky enough I had great people around me who made the rehab process easy. Surgery went well, so good time to do it. You’d rather do it in the offseason than during the season. But yeah, I’m back to playing, back healthy. I feel good. My ankle feels strong, and I’ve done a ton of work on it. I’m feeling good.”

Great words to hear from Giddey, who appears to be fully healthy as the season inches closer. The Bulls will need him at full strength in order to make any sort of run at the play-in or playoffs.

Giddey also praised rookie Caleb Wilson, highlighting his versatile skill set.

“I think the thing about him is he doesn’t have one part of his game. He can kind of do everything, and he obviously showed the way he can shoot the ball at summer league, and he can get downhill. He’s athletic, so there are no real holes in his game, so to speak.”

When the Chicago Bulls begin playing preseason ball next month, it’ll be interesting to see the rotations that new coach Tiago Splitter throws out.

Even in the preseason, it’s a great time to see who plays well with who.
