Chicago White Sox’s catcher carousel continues after Tommy Pham move
The Chicago White Sox were hoping Tommy Pham could play a role in their playoff push. However, a left calf strain has sent him to the 10-day injured list.
In turn, the White Sox have called up catcher Edgar Quero, the team announced. It’s yet another chapter in Chicago’s 2026 catcher saga.
Quero is joining a pair of backstops already on the roster in Kyle Teel and Jake Rogers. Fellow catcher Drew Romo appeared in 60 games with the team before being demoted to the minors. Simply put, it’s been bit of a revolving door behind the plate in Chicago.
Based on their former top prospect pedigree, the White Sox would likely want Teel or Quero to win the job long-term. But for now, Chicago is focused on clinching the NL Central. Whoever gives the White Sox the likeliest chance to win in their eyes will earn the more immediate opportunities.
But now back in the majors, Quero will have another opportunity to carve out his role. He isn’t in the lineup on Sunday though, as Teel earned the start.
What Edgar Quero offers White Sox
Quero has appeared in 65 games for the White Sox in 2026, hitting .208 with three home runs and 19 RBIs. His numbers may not be the most inspiring, but the catcher showed flashes of brilliance during his rookie season. Quero’s first 111 games in the league resulted in a .268 batting average with five home runs and 36 RBIs.
The catcher is still only 23-years-old. In 2024, he ranked as the fourth-best prospect in the organization, via MLB Pipeline. Long-term, the White Sox will remain high on Quero.
Whether that leads to regular season playing time is yet to be seen. With Rogers in the mix as well, Chicago will need to have a nightly conversation about who gets the start. Perhaps once the playoffs draw closer the franchise will have a firm starter in place.
Quero is looking to be that answer at catcher. Solidification behind the plate would end the South Side’s continuous carousel.
