OTL: Can Minter Reverse Fortunes Against Jonathan Taylor, Colts?
We made it, folks!
There are ZERO more weeks without football for the rest of 2026. We made it

With Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season kicking off tonight, everyone’s making predictions for not only season openers, but how the season will go as a whole. Before getting to the latter, we have to remember to take things one game at a time.
Luckily, Baltimore has little trouble getting up for Colts week. Things will be even more special this year, though, as we’ll get our first real look at what the Jesse Minter era might bring to Charm City. Here’s more on Minter’s approach to Week 1 from Tuesday:

Interestingly, despite Minter being lauded for his defensive schemes, Indianapolis put some numbers up against the Chargers last season. While it’s unclear how much success QB Daniel Jones will have in 2026, it’s still worth noting:
.@ChuckPaganoNFL on Ravens-Colts week 1 matchup: “Look what they did to Jesse Minter’s defense with the Chargers last year when Daniel Jones was healthy. Colts won 38-24. JT avg’d 5.9 ypc. Scored 3 TDs. You can bet Jesse is studying that tape and what they did.” #RavensFlock

You better believe Minter will have a plan for Jonathan Taylor. Big week for KHam and Simpson.
Taylor is such a monster in the run & passing game. And the Colts do a nice job of scheming him to big the engine of their offense.

Even with Baltimore opening as favorites, there’s no doubt that stopping RB Jonathan Taylor will be the key to success. For Indy, everything starts with the ground game. Beyond just starting 1-0, though, the Ravens have the chance to make a statement in Week 1. I like Baltimore to win 27-17, but the matchup between our defensive line (especially if Nnamdi Madubuike’s out) and Taylor will define the game.
“For Baltimore & Lamar Jackson, this is a statement game… To show to the entire NFL world we have something cooking with Jesse Minter.”

All that being said, Yahoo Fantasy’s Hayden Winks highlights that Indianapolis’ game script leans toward the pass:

Much has been made of Minter’s potential to improve the secondary, but let’s not forget the improvements former Raven Odafe Oweh made after being shipped out to LA. While EDGE Trey Hendrickson has a proven track record, could he wreak havoc against the Colts?
Trey Hendrickson had a 22.5% pass-rush win rate during his back-to-back 17.5 sack seasons:

– Myles Garrett
– Will Anderson Jr.Can’t wait to see him under Jesse Minter.

As we well know, the performance of the pass rush and secondary often go hand-in-hand. So, how could Minter’s ability
to disguise coverages cause problems? Ken McKusick broke that down Tuesday morning:
Jesse Minter’s scheme could be a nightmare for opposing offenses.

All in all, fans and players are eager to see what Minter’s arrival could mean for Baltimore in regulation games. Kyle Hamilton, for one, thinks big things are ahead:
Kyle Hamilton on Ravens: “A lot of teams are in the situation where they get a new coach & it’s kind of a rebuild. I don’t think anybody thinks we’re in that position. We’ve made these changes to get to the mountaintop & achieve our ultimate goal, which is winning a Super Bowl.” pic.twitter.com/g2gobt8Cte

On the other side of the ball, all eyes will be on Declan Doyle’s offense. To me, this is where the long-term discussions start. I don’t expect the Ravens to have too much trouble against Indy, but it’ll be interesting to see how the kinks are worked out early in the season. At this point, QB Lamar Jackson and company believe the sky is the limit. This year, expect to see a slight change in Jackson’s mechanics, particularly with footwork.

— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) September 8, 2026
He’ll never state personal goals, but there’s a trend emerging with Jackson’s success (and hardware) after replacing a previous OC. Could the adjustments he’s made to footwork help that trend continue in 2026? Many believe so:
Lamar Jackson has won MVP the last two times he entered a season with a new offensive coordinator:

2023 – Todd Monken

Based on last year, though, you can’t discuss a Jackson MVP without being wary of O-Line play. With the Ravens releasing their Week 1 depth chart, here’s how things shake out:

As many have said: Not the best, not the worst. You’d hope the C position will be ironed out once Ethan Pocic is healthy and provides Jovaughn Gwyn with competition, but don’t overlook John Simpson’s play early on. We know how important Guard play is, and Simpson was brought in to shore things up alongside rookie Vega Ioane.
If the Ravens see significant year-over-year improvements along the line, we might see them climb up power rankings and (hopefully) watch them play in the NFL’s first Valentine’s Day game:
