RAVENS HISTORY: September 8
Lighter slate than the 7th, but one entry that dwarfs everything else on the calendar.
September 8, 1996 — Steelers 31, Ravens 17 (Three Rivers Stadium)
Where it all started with them. Week 2 of the franchise’s inaugural season, the Ravens went to Three Rivers and lost 31-17 in the first-ever meeting between Baltimore and Pittsburgh. A week earlier they’d beaten the Raiders 19-14 at Memorial Stadium in the first game in team history. Then they went to Pittsburgh and got a proper welcome.
September 8, 2002 — Panthers 10, Ravens 7 (Charlotte)
Twenty months after Super Bowl XXXV, this was the bill coming due. The cap-purge roster opened 2002 in Charlotte and mustered seven points in a 10-7 loss. It somehow got worse the following week — 25-0 at home to Tampa Bay, who went on to win the whole thing.
Not a memorable game so much as a memorable feeling: the hangover after the party. That team finished 7-9. Worth remembering when people talk about the cost of going all-in.
September 8, 2019 — Ravens 59, Dolphins 10 (Hard Rock Stadium)
And then the day the Lamar Jackson era announced itself.
Nine minutes into the season, a South Florida kid had Miami fans booing their own team. Baltimore gained 49 yards on the first play, a Mark Ingram run, and never slowed down. Jackson’s first nine passes — all completions — went for 204 yards and four touchdowns, including 47- and 83-yarders to first-rounder Marquise Brown inside the first 11 minutes. Willie Snead got one for 33, Miles Boykin five, Patrick Ricard one. Final line: 17-of-20, 324 yards, five touchdowns. A perfect 158.3 rating.
The Ravens set a franchise record for first-half points and an NFL record for points in the first half of a season opener, leading 42-10 at the break, and broke franchise marks for points and total yards with 643. Ingram, also making his Baltimore debut, ran for 107 and two scores. Then came the line that ended the offseason argument for good: “Not bad for a running back.”
That team went 14-2. Lamar went unanimous MVP.
It all traces back to a Sunday afternoon in Miami Gardens.
The ledger: Ravens are 1-2 all-time on September 8 — but that one win might be the best regular season performance in franchise history.
