Will the Chicago White Sox carry 3 catchers in September?

Chicago White Sox, White Sox News, White Sox Rumors

Catcher was a major topic of discussion for the Chicago White Sox leading up to the trade deadline. The team ultimately acquired Joey Bart, only for him to break his hand just three games into his tenure with the organization. At the time, there were also questions about whether Kyle Teel, who suffered a significant ankle injury a few weeks earlier, would be able to return at all in 2026.

Now, with roster expansion looming on September 1, Teel is already four games into an injury rehab assignment, which includes a three-hit performance on Sunday August 30. That means the White Sox will eventually have to decide whether carrying three catchers makes sense, even if that decision doesn’t come immediately on September 1.

For now, Jake Rogers and Drew Romo occupy the two catcher spots on Chicago’s active roster, but Teel’s impending return could force the team to make an interesting roster decision.

Once Kyle Teel is ready to return, will the Chicago White Sox carry three catchers during expanded September rosters?

Despite Rogers’ recent walk-off home run against the New York Mets on Aug. 21, he has not outperformed Romo offensively over the past two weeks. Rogers is slashing .150/.261/.300 across six games, while Romo has posted a .227/.346/.364 line during that same span, which is eight games for him.

That makes Teel’s potential return even more intriguing. Despite his health struggles this season, he still represent the organization’s best opportunity to get offensive production from the catcher position, something that could prove critical if Chicago reaches the postseason.

All that said, carrying three catchers during expanded rosters could make plenty of sense for the White Sox. Having a trio behind the plate would allow the team to better manage each catcher’s workload while giving manager Will Venable greater flexibility. It would allow him to use pinch-runners or defensive replacements more aggressively without worrying about leaving himself without a primary catcher later in the game.

Whenever Teel is ready to return, the White Sox will have an interesting roster decision to make, but carrying three catchers may be the best solution. With Rogers and Romo already on the roster and Teel potentially providing the biggest offensive upside, Chicago could benefit from having all three available down the stretch. The added flexibility would be especially valuable in September as well, as they look to close out an American League Central Division championship and possible bye to the Divisional Series.
