Braden Montgomery, the 23-year-old Chicago White Sox rookie outfielder who was acquired in the Garrett Crochet deal with the Boston Red Sox and made his MLB Debut on June 9 of this year, has already made his mark on this postseason. During the Wild Card Series against the Houston Astros, Montgomery went 2-for-8 with a pair of singles.

Now, two games into the American League Division Series, he has his first postseason extra-base hit and RBI, which came at a crucial moment in the sixth inning. On Monday against the Cleveland Guardians, Montgomery delivered a two-run go-ahead double off of left-handed reliever Erik Sabrowski, helping the White Sox secure a 4-3 victory and take a commanding 2-0 series lead.

Interestingly, Montgomery, a switch-hitter, has struggled mightily against left-handed pitching this season, posting just a .129/.204/.226 slash line in those matchups. But, he made the most of a first-pitch mistake from Sabrowski, who had struggled to find the strike zone much of that inning. That makes Montgomery’s aggressiveness and awareness to recognize the opportunity to swing at a pitch he could handle even more impressive, and as a result it etched his name in the franchise record books.

According to Just Baseball, Montgomery’s go-ahead, two-run double made him the youngest player in White Sox history to record a go-ahead RBI in a postseason game while his team was trailing. That distinction is important, as go-ahead RBIs in games where the score is tied do not qualify for this particular mark. For example, Luis Robert Jr hit a go-ahead home run in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series at age 23, but the game was tied at the time.

Overall, it was yet another milestone moment for the 23-year-old rookie, who delivered when Chicago needed him most and helped put the White Sox one win away from advancing to the ALCS.
