Chicago Bulls make unfortunate history in loss to Raptors

Caleb Wilson

The new-look rebuild Chicago Bulls weren’t supposed to contend for the postseason, but their season debut on Tuesday night was less than impressive given the hype around No. 4 pick Caleb Wilson.

The Bulls couldn’t play defense or shoot the basketball (when they weren’t turning the ball over) against the Toronto Raptors, and that led to a historically bad night for Chicago. The Bulls shot just 32% from the field, connecting on 27 of 85 field goal attempts. Even worse, they went 11% beyond the arc. Chicago lost the turnover battle 27–11, giving up 35 points off of turnovers to the eight they gained off Toronto’s turnovers.

That led to a ghastly 135–92 Toronto win in front of 19,800 at Scotiabank Arena.

Per K.C. Johnson of CHSN, the 43-point loss was the largest margin of defeat in Bulls’ franchise history.

Wilson finished the night going 7 of 21 from the field and scoring 16 points. He had nine turnovers. He made only one of his eight three-point attempts and finished as a –45 on the floor, the worst on the Bulls.

Josh Giddey had a forgettable night, making one of his 10 shot attempts. He had five turnovers and was a –39 on the court. Matas Buzelis led the Bulls in scoring with 17 points, but 13 of those points came from the free throw line. He went 2 of 8 from the field.

Before the season started, Wilson admitted he needed to adjust to the physicality of the NBA. He went fourth because he wasn’t the most polished product in the 2026 NBA Draft.

“You have to overcompensate when you lack in that department,” Wilson said of his physicality, via Sports Illustrated. “I’m not the biggest guy, and I know that. But I’m working on that. I have to be in the right position when it’s time to box out, I know when it’s time to get over a screen, I can’t be standing straight up. Just stuff like that.

“But the adjustment has been pretty good for me. I feel like I’m making steps in the right direction, and it can only get better.”

The Bulls hope it will get better. They next travel to play the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.
