Sophie Cunningham calls out Angel Reese’s actions during WNBA playoffs

Sophie Cunningham has played against Angel Reese multiple times in the WNBA. She is familiar with her playing style and knows how hard she competes. The Indiana Fever guard recently called out the Atlanta Dream forward for her dangerous plays in the semifinals series against the New York Liberty.

Cunningham and the Fever failed to advance to the second round. The Las Vegas Aces won in three games and eliminated them from the playoffs. She began the season with the starting unit but the coaching staff moved her to the bench for her offensive firepower. However, the 30-year-old struggled to deliver consistent performances despite being her team’s highest-scoring reserve. She will become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Meanwhile, Reese and the Dream will face the Golden State Valkyries in the WNBA Finals. They went undefeated through the first two rounds, sweeping the Washington Mystics and Liberty.

Indiana Fever: Sophie Cunningham discusses Angel Reese’s ‘dangerous’ play

Cunningham discussed the incidents in which Reese was involved during the New York series. She highlighted how the three-time All-Star protects her teammates and also stressed on her “dangerous” play.

“Angel, I appreciate her having her teammates back that just shows that she cares and that she loves her teammates,” Cunningham said.  “Here’s my thing, if you’re going to chase someone down the court and get in someone’s ear, that should be a tech anytime. That should be a tech. It’s going to be a tech in the regular season. Now, if she were to stay on her side and just kind of yell and say something, I’m all for that… Angel is going to play hard. She is a player who goes after the ball.

“I appreciate that about players (like) her, wanting to get on the floor and make the extra effort. But you can’t tackle someone in the air and then go for someone’s knees and ankles. That’s a dangerous play. Technically, both of those are a little dangerous. And for those just to go uncalled, is that not weird?”

Fans know Reese for her rebounding, hustle and on-court toughness. Meanwhile, Cunningham has established herself as an enforcer. She drew the line on when something can cause harm to another player, once again proving that she’s not shy to speak her mind.
