Troy Reeder returns to the practice squad after a brief exit from the Jets, while Quinton Bell is the newest edge defender in the building. The team announced Tuesday that it had released Reeder from the active roster, signed Bell to the practice squad, and released tight end Cody Hardy from the practice squad. Then, in their Wednesday update, the Jets said Reeder had signed back to the practice squad. That second move is important context for a roster story that changed within a day.

Reeder originally joined the Jets practice squad on September 2 and was signed to the active roster on September 22. He dressed for four games, made four tackles and logged 85 special teams snaps. Those numbers tell you where much of his work has come, even if his name does not usually lead the postgame conversation. His return keeps a veteran who knows the team in the building, but he is currently on the practice squad rather than the active roster.

Bell gives the Jets another option on the edge. He spent time with San Francisco most recently and recorded four defensive tackles and one special teams stop in preseason action, according to the Jets. Across four NFL seasons with Tampa Bay, Atlanta and Miami, he has appeared in 33 games with three starts. Bell has 38 career tackles, a sack, a pass defended and a forced fumble, so this is an addition with some NFL experience behind it.

His path to this point is unusual enough to be worth mentioning. Bell was a receiver before switching to defensive end during his senior season at Prairie View A&M, where he earned second-team all-conference honors. The Raiders selected him in the seventh round of the 2019 draft. Changing positions that late and lasting across several NFL stops takes some doing, and now he gets another opportunity on the Jets practice squad.

Hardy was the other departure in Tuesday’s announcement. The tight end had joined the practice squad on September 22 after entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of NC State. Taken together, the moves reshaped some of the depth behind the active Jets Roster without putting Bell directly on the 53-man squad. The key distinction today is that Reeder is back, so Tuesday’s release should not be read as the end of his time with the team.
