MLB’s proposed salary floor would be music to young White Sox’s ears
Over the next month, the Chicago White Sox and the other 29 MLB teams will navigate the offseason without a clear picture of baseball’s future financial landscape. The current collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1, and if a new deal isn’t reached by then, a work stoppage could follow, potentially putting further delays on free-agent signings, trades and other offseason moves.
That said, one proposal being discussed as part of the new CBA is the implementation of a salary floor, which would require each team to spend a minimum amount on player payroll. MLB recently proposed setting that threshold at $180.2 million beginning in 2028, with the 2027 season serving as a transition year for teams to prepare for the change.
If a salary floor is ultimately adopted, 12 teams would be required to increase their spending based on 2026 payroll figures, with the White Sox among them. For context, Spotrac currently projects Chicago’s 2027 payroll at approximately $125 million, leaving the team roughly $55 million short of the proposed $180.2 million threshold.
For the White Sox’s young core, the potential implementation of a salary floor has to be music to their ears, as the added spending requirement could encourage Chicago to pursue contract extensions with some of its emerging players to help meet the minimum payroll threshold.
Young Chicago White Sox players/prospects may be the biggest beneficiaries of a salary floor

If Chicago is required to increase its spending in the coming seasons, it could look to reward some of its pre-arbitration players, such as Colson Montgomery, Chase Meidroth, Sam Antonacci or Tristan Peters, with early contract extensions. With Meidroth, Antonacci and Peters all earning Silver Slugger finalist honors this year, continued offensive success and additional accolades could increase their value and make them more expensive to retain once they reach arbitration.
The organization could also explore signing a pre-MLB contract extension, similar to the approach it famously took with Luis Robert Jr. While that deal did not work in Chicago’s favor, down the road they could keep Roch Cholowsky or Caleb Bonemer in mind as candidates for a similar deal.
Lastly, a salary floor could lead the White Sox to revisit the possibility of extending someone like Munetaka Murakami. Chicago has explored those discussions with him in the past, and with the organization potentially needing to increase its payroll in the coming years, reopening those conversations could make sense.
