The Yankees Are A Sinking Ship

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Another day, another departure from the New York Yankees. At this rate, the only people left in the Bronx will be Brian Cashman, Aaron Boone, and whoever is responsible for telling Hal Steinbrenner that everything is just fine.

Tanner Swanson is gone. The Yankees’ longtime catching coordinator is leaving to become the bench coach of the Seattle Mariners.

Good for him. Seriously. Enjoy Seattle, Tanner. Don’t forget your raincoat. You were never very good anyway.

Was Swanson some irreplaceable baseball genius? Please. I’m not throwing a parade over his departure. The Yankees have become experts at celebrating individual accomplishments while the organization collectively falls flat on its face.

But Swanson isn’t really the story here.

The story is that people are leaving the Yankees while the people responsible for this organization’s continued failures remain comfortably employed.

Think about that.

Shelley Duncan, a guy with fire, passion, toughness, and an actual understanding of what wearing pinstripes should mean, is heading to the Boston Red Sox.

Now Swanson is heading to Seattle. And who’s still standing in the Bronx? Cashman and Boone. Of course they are and yet, they shouldn’t be.

Apparently, the Yankees have developed a revolutionary new philosophy: When things aren’t working, keep the people in charge and let everyone else find a better opportunity.

Brilliant.

This organization has become stale. Predictable. Complacent. A franchise that talks about excellence while repeatedly accepting disappointment.  Cashman continues to assemble rosters that need fixing almost as soon as they’re assembled. Boone continues to manage with the urgency of a guy waiting for his dinner reservation. And Steinbrenner continues to reward the same leadership that has failed to deliver a World Series championship since 2009.

Seventeen years. No championship. And somehow, nobody at the top ever pays the price.

That’s not stability. That’s institutional complacency. The Yankees don’t necessarily have a Tanner Swanson problem. He didn’t exactly help coordinate our catchers. Good riddance. The Yankees have a leadership problem. A culture problem. An accountability problem.

And while other organizations look for ways to improve, the Yankees seem determined to convince themselves that what they’ve been doing is good enough.

It isn’t.

So congratulations to Tanner Swanson. Congratulations to Shelley Duncan. Both are moving on to new opportunities.

Meanwhile, Yankee fans are stuck watching the same tired movie with the same director, the same producer, and the same disappointing ending.

The ship is taking on water. People are leaving. And the two guys steering it are apparently getting another cruise.

Welcome to the New York Yankees. Where everybody can move on. Except the people who should.

Boycott this awful team.
