Elephant Imitates Human Speech, Hear Elephant Speak Korean
An elephant at a zoo in South Korea has learned to imitate human speech and has a vocabulary of several words, such as choah (good) and nuo (lie down).
An Asian elephant named Koshik can imitate human speech, say multinational researchers.
The elephant says words in Korean that apparently can be understood by speakers of the language.
It’s unclear why 22-year-old Koshik started mimicking human speech but this researcher says that it might be related to his experiences as a juvenile.
Sukhun Oh, Co-Researcher says, “”To us, this research shows that Koshik obviously learned and imitated human speech to establish a relationship with his keepers.”
Koshik was the only elephant living at Everland Zoo, south of Seoul, for about five years in his youth.
He had only people for company during an important phase for bonding and development.
