5 Most Famous Robberies in History

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

A robbery isn’t an easy feat to pull off. It requires some daring and lots of planning. You have to stare in the face of imprisonment and penalties. It’s all a big risk. You risk everything for those valuables. Some robberies have left the world wondering as they were difficult to pull off. Here are some famous robberies in the history of the world.

Central Bank of Iraq (18th March, 2003- Baghdad, Iraq: $1 billion)

Some robberies need planning while others require brute force but this particular robbery was simple and in comparison to the simplicity of it, enormous in its fortunes. Sadam Hussein practically owned The Central Bank of Iraq and before the coalition forces started bombing Iraq, he sent his son to withdraw a net of 1 billion US dollars. The money didn’t get him too far as Saddam was found hiding in a hole by the troops. Out of that 1 billion 650 million were recovered while 350 millions are yet to be discovered. The money was found hidden in the walls of Sadam’s palaces.

City Bonds Robbery (2nd May, 1990- London, UK: £292 million)

The second largest robbery amounted about 292 million pounds. It was conducted in the form of bearer bonds as John Goddard a 58 year old messenger working for a broker was mugged on a London side street. The nature of the bonds was such that whoever was carrying them was the owner. Goddard was held at the knife point as the thief ran away with 301 treasury bills each valuing 1 million pounds. The police believed the robbery to be conducted by Patrick Thomas but he was found shot dead before he could be charged with the offence. All of the bonds but 2 were recovered by the police and the FBI. What’s amazing is the fact that the second largest robbery in the world was carried out by a low life thief and that too just at a knife point.
Boston Museum (18th March, 1990- Boston, USA: $300 million)

This is the biggest art heist in the history. The two men who were robbers convinced the two security guards that they were responding to some disturbance in the museum. The guards against the museum policy let the “officers” into the premises and it wasn’t long before they found themselves hand cuffed in the museum basement. The men spent 81 minutes in the museum and selected valuables that valued 300 million US dollars combined. They collected the surveillance tapes and made off with the goods. They were never heard from again. Interestingly they seemed to be amateurs as they made no attempts to avoid damaging the paintings and to much surprise left much valuable articles behinds. The case hasn’t yet been solved and there is still a reward worth 5 millions for anyone who returns these paintings.
Baghdad Bank Robbery (12th July 2007, Baghdad, Iraq: $282 million)

In this particular robbery it was the banks own security guards that made off with more than 282 million dollars. The bank employees when showed up to work found the doors unlocked, the vaults opened and there was no money left behind. It was suspected that the guards had been aided by the militias to carry out such a big heist. They were never caught and the money was never discovered.
Knightsbridge Security Deposit (12th July, 1987-UK: £60 million)

Valerio Veccei was an Italian who migrated to the UK in 1986. Back home he was wanted for about fifty armed robberies. He in an attempt to continue his successful run robbed the Knightsbridge Security deposit. He made off with robbed valuables of good sixty million pounds which if counted today is worth 146 million US dollars. He migrated to Latin America after this big hand and was caught a few years later when he came back to the UK to retrieve his beloved Ferrari. He was imprisoned for 22 years and was killed in a gun fight with the police.
