Greta Thunberg's Speech To the U.N.

I know she’s just a kid. The wonder is that she’s saying what so many of us have wanted to say– and she’s actually being listened to! Something is shifting for this to be “a thing.” For her to be a celebrity for climate change means… the message about the urgency of acting has ramped up in some unfathomable way.

Greer called her a brat. I think he’s wrong. She’s just like him, really– follows where her mind takes her and doesn’t allow social pressure to cow her like it does so many of us. She’s on the autism spectrum just like he is. She’s not doing this for attention. She’s very uncomfortable with it, you can tell watching her. But she still speaks, despite all that.

I don’t know that she’ll move many to change– that is, the wealthy corporate multi-nationals who run this planet (into the ground.) But she will make a mark in history that our society KNEW that we were consuming the planet to death and char-broiling the world and many were not going to just muddle through it quietly.

When the hippies finished college and “grew up” and got jobs and families, they gave up their dreams. Will iGen or Gen Z do the same? While they are in school and have parents supporting them, they have the time and financial ability to protest and make a stink. Then life forces most of them to join the crazy system grind and be a part of what’s killing the planet like most of the rest of us.

I wanted to join the march in Seattle, but I could barely walk 50 feet with my flare. This next Friday will be another one, but I don’t know that I can do it. I’m watching from the sidelines and cheering them on in my quiet way, though. I don’t blame any young person for being pissed. I was pissed and I know I’d probably die before things got truly crazy. I don’t think that’s true of Gen Z. Calling them “Gen Z” may be appropriate, because they may be the last witnesses of “the time before” the world went mad.
