Spent Labor Day Weekend Painting Guest/Sister's Room

I haven’t painted anything in a while and the off-white walls of the guest room were getting to me a little…

Finally, Cat gave me permission to paint it, but only if I paid for it myself. FINE! It was a little over $60 to get quality paint, but I already had most of the gear needed (rollers, brushes, etc.) I just grabbed some plastic sheeting to go over furniture.

My reasoning is that it will much harder to paint that room when there is yet more furniture in there, and if Erica’s moving in, we’ll have at least an extra desk and dresser taking up space. I always prefer to paint a space before there’s ANY furniture in it if I can help it, but we ran out of time and my energy before getting to the spare room.

But it looks great! It’s a delicate Robin’s Egg blue (which is my sister’s favorite color, incidentally) and that color, along with a light sage green and tan color are the sea-themed set we’ve decided upon for the room. I’m thinking I’ll paint some old, cheap dressers in tan and sage green at some point– likely late this fall or late next spring. We got the color scheme idea from an old painting Cat put in the room with boats on a sea.

I’m incredibly proud of having the energy and means to do something nice for my sister and for the household in general. It’s the guest room, and it’s seen a lot of action. I think some actual decoration might be long overdue!

Reese & Sleep are up here, helping trim hedges and clean walkways and helping to clear areas around the derelict mobile home that is due for demolition in early October. Reese also put up some weed barrier next to my bay and bedroom windows, allowing only violets and ferns to grow.

We’re also socializing and planning. They’re going to host me in Portland most of the time while I take a couple of weeks to deal with my mother’s house and try to help my sister get ready to move. I’m incredibly lucky to have friends who don’t bat an eye at my sleeping on a cot in their dining area for days on end!

Yet I am not looking forward to my time in Portland. It’s going to be hard work and misery… as I get bludgeoned over the head with my mother’s mental illness and try to do something to alleviate an obvious emergency situation.
