Migraine Chain Strikes Again

If you’ve been following along, you may have noticed that I put some pieces together regarding my health set-backs recently. Every time I get Covid, it seems I get a mild sort of cold along with some loss of taste, but only in one spot– and THEN, after the cold is over, I get migraines for anywhere from a couple of days to several weeks. In general, though, the time period for the chain of migraines I get afterwards is trending shorter.

And… yeah, I got it again the week of my birthday, and I’ve had a few migraine days afterwards. Although now I know that if light just hurts even a little, I need to avoid light and take medication and I can avoid most of the migraines. Not always, but mostly. I can plan a little and save myself a lot of hurt. So I am adapting. It’s another dink on my suckage list, but I’m figuring out how to deal with it.

Cat’s helpful [she said sarcastically] suggesting that I will probably have to get those ugly old-people wrap-around sunglasses.

I already have wrap-around sunglasses and use them a lot (that look pretty okay, if I do say so myself). But honestly, when light hurts enough to trigger a migraine, a dark room is the only thing that will do. Sunglasses don’t block out enough light to prevent a migraine trigger, and those that do– blind me. Cat wants me available to run errands more, but if I can’t see at all– I’m useless anyway. Besides, it’s light that triggers it in the mostly quiet area where we live, but noise could be a trigger, or smells, if I’m out and about. I’m afraid there’s no easy fix for this, and I know that drives Cat pretty wild, because she’s trying to problem-solve and the idea that there’s no fix doesn’t land well with her.

I get it. I’m not liking it much either, but I’ve had 40 years to get used to the idea that sometimes my body and/or brain won’t cooperate with me and often there’s not a lot I can do to make that better. Cat’s been living with me for almost 7 years now, and she’s figured out a lot of stuff about me and how I work (or don’t) but some things are taking longer to hit home.

Right now, I’m just out of commission on light-sensitive days, and if I’m too distracted to notice the mild light sensitivity, by the time it graduates to acute sensitivity, it’s too late and a migraine will strike and then it will take the rest of the day and part of the next to get back to functional– or not, because fatigue is still pretty prominent these days, especially after yet another round with a Covid strain.
