What you should do immediately after a bone injury is incurred.

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

There are times when we have accidents and bone injuries are inevitable. When this happens, we often panic because we do not know what to do. There are times when the doctors could not get to us immediately this is why we should be prepared. We must train ourselves to know first aid when it comes to broken bones. When our bones break, it is not only the bones that affected. There are also other parts of the body that are damaged. Our muscles, skin, blood vessels and nerves may also be damaged. This is why we feel pain. Most of the time, we have to act immediately so that the bone fracture would not worsen. It could worsen if it does not receive immediate medical attention.

To prevent the worsening of the bone fractures, there are first aids that we could do. First aid could be learned through medical seminars. There is also available information on the internet that will teach you the things that you need to do to the site of the fracture. Knowing these could save someone’s bones or your own bones too. In instances wherein the doctors could not get to you immediately, knowledge of the first aid could save you. You can even instruct other people to do it to you when you are the patient who has the broken bones.

Steps to take to prevent fractures from worsening

The first thing that you need to do is to call for help. You need to call the emergency line to inform of your condition. Later on, you could call an orthopedic surgeonto help you with your broken bones. They are experts and they know what to do so that your bones can heal and so that you can use them again. If your bones are severely broken, the orthopedic surgeons could perform an operation to fix your bones. Sometimes, they use different metals and place it in your bones to fix them. Others will just ask you to undergo physical therapy to help with your condition.

The next thing you need to do is to stop any bleeding. Bleeding may worsen the chance of your patient from surviving because severe bleeding could lead your patient to die. You could slow down the bleeding by applying pressure to the wound with the use of a cloth. This will prevent blood from oozing out of the wound. You have to make sure that the cloth you use is clean so that you do not give an infection to the wound.

Immobilizing the area is what you should do next. A lot of people make a mistake in moving the injured area. They do not know that moving it could worsen the condition of the patient. If you know how to splint the area, then you could do it. The splint will ensure that the area would not be moved. You can use boards, padded splints or sticks. You could also use cloth as padding to your splint.

You should also remove the jewelry that the patient has. It might be more difficult for you to remove these later when the site is already inflamed. To prevent the swelling of the site, you can use ice packs and this will also help you deal with the pain. You have to wrap it in cloth so that it wouldn’t be too harsh on the skin. Also, lay the person down and elevate his feet to prevent shock. This will prevent the patient from feeling dizzy and it will also make them feel more comfortable.

Knowing these simple steps will help the patient to be more comfortable and to lessen the pain that they feel. These steps would also prevent the fracture from worsening. Sometimes what people do to the fracture may just worsen the condition. It is important that you know what to do so that when emergency situations like this happens, you would know what to do.

After doing the things that you can, it is now up to the hospitals to take care of the patient. The hospitals have enough tools and equipment to help bring your fractured bones back to normal. Sometimes, the fracture is so se ere that they need to operate on you. The doctors could place metals on your bones for added support. They would also let you undergo therapy so that you can once again move your body. There are cases when it would take time before you would be able to move your body freely. Sometimes, when the damage is too severe, the doctors would advise you to undergo occupational therapy. This will help you to adjust with your condition so that you could still do the things you need to do even if some parts of your body are damaged. Sometimes they could also advise you to see psychologists so that you could accept your condition.
