PREPPING: How much Ammo should you have for when SHTF

We often ask ourselves “How much ammunition should we have for each gun”. I am sure every prepper who owns a gun has ran across that questions once or twice. But really, how much ammo do we actually need?

There is really now “limit” to how much ammo you should have. It is strictly up to you. Some store ammo at their bug out locations or in their homes, or both! It is good to keep ammo where it can be accessed 99% of the time. This is because disaster can strike in a moment’s notice and you have to be ready for that.

The amount of ammo you need depends on the gun and what you are using the gun for. Hunting, defense, or leisure? Ammo also varies in weight. You can carry 500 rounds of .22 LR (long rifle) for the amount of 200 .223 or 5.56 in weight. Of course .223 and 5.56 have more stopping power, so that is why you may need to prioritize it. Usually you will hunt small game with .22LR. It is cheap and lightweight. Although it can cause damage, it is sometimes unreliable (depending on what brand you get). So in the matter of defense, you may need something with a bit more punch.

Now that we have the uses underway, let’s get back to the main point of how much ammo you need. Most will say around 1,000 rounds PER GUN (NOT CALIBER) should be a good amount. It is always a good idea to store even more at permanent caches or bug out locations.
